Dean of Graduate Studies
Job Summary
Dean has the responsibility for continuously improving the quality of University-wide, graduate and professional educational programs. This academic officer is also expected to seek innovation, and be sensitive to factors affecting faculty development, especially junior faculty seeking successful academic careers. This officer will prepare and implement concrete plans for increasing retention of promising junior faculty recruited to Tuskegee University (TU).
Essential Job Duties
- Prepare and distribute the Graduate Faculty Roster at the beginning of each academic school year
- Recommend to the President, through the Provost, the names of faculty members for appointment to the Graduate Faculty, with certification of eligibility, upon the suggestion of college deans
- Implement policies and interpreting rules and regulations relating to graduate programs to students and faculty whenever necessary
- Resolve any special problems of graduate students in consultation with the College Dean and/or Department Head
- Make and adjust programs of study for students enrolled in the graduate programs in accordance with academic regulations and resolving conflicts from a lack of compliance with regulations
- Approve addition or substitution of graduate courses, as recommended by the College Dean
- Authorize graduate students to carry extra semester credits when deemed justifiable or upon the recommendation of the College Dean for completion of Science and Master of Education and Ph.D. Degrees
- Verify that drafts of Theses/Dissertations have been checked for English usage and giving final approval to final compliant documents
- Approve and schedule at the request of College Deans, final oral examinations for graduate students and notifying members of the Examination Committee
- Certify to the Registrar all candidates for graduate degrees and notify Library Services and/or electronic repository about compliance, with requirements, or lack thereof
- Represent Tuskegee University at appropriate professional meetings and participating in commencement exercises
- Serve on University committees when appointed by the Provost or President, selected or designated in an ex-officio capacity
- Recommend new programs for graduate studies at the master’s and doctorate levels
- Motivate the faculty to do research and working closely with the Office of University Advancement and Sponsored Programs to provide opportunities for the faculty to do research
- Advise the Provost, regularly through conferences and reports on the status of the graduate programs with regard to admissions standards and enrollment of students, curricular matters, and opportunities for research
- Perform other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree
- Tenured Full Professor
- Experience mentoring graduate students as both a major advisor and committee member
- Demonstrated strong record of scholarship
- Experience obtaining external support for graduate programs and students
- Supervisory, administrative, and leadership experience
- Experience recruiting graduate students
- Teaching experience and course development at the graduate level
