Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Substance Abuse Peer Support Specialist to join our team at Twin Rails. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing guidance, encouragement, and understanding to individuals struggling with substance abuse issues. Through your own lived experience and recovery journey, you will empower clients to navigate challenges, set achievable goals, and foster a sense of community and hope.
Responsibilities:
- Peer Counseling: Provide one-on-one and group peer counseling sessions to individuals with substance abuse issues. Utilize active listening and empathy to establish rapport, understand clients' experiences, and offer support in their recovery journey.
- Advocacy: Advocate for clients' needs within the healthcare system, social services, and other relevant institutions. Assist clients in accessing resources such as treatment programs, housing assistance, job training, and legal support.
- Education and Support: Offer education on substance abuse, addiction recovery, coping strategies, and relapse prevention techniques to clients and their families. Facilitate support groups and workshops focused on skill-building, self-care, and wellness.
- Peer Mentorship: Serve as a role model and mentor for individuals in recovery, sharing personal experiences, insights, and strategies for overcoming obstacles. Encourage clients to develop healthy relationships, engage in positive activities, and pursue personal and professional goals.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with counselors, therapists, healthcare providers, and community organizations to coordinate care and support services for clients. Participate in treatment planning meetings to ensure holistic care.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions, progress notes, and service plans in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements. Complete documentation in a timely manner using electronic health record systems.
- Self-Care and Professional Development: Engage in ongoing self-care practices to prevent burnout and maintain personal well-being. Pursue opportunities for professional development, training, and certification to enhance skills and stay updated on best practices in peer support and addiction recovery.
Qualifications:
- Lived experience with substance abuse and addiction recovery is essential.
- Certification as a Peer Support Specialist
- Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, active listening, and effective communication.
- Ability to establish boundaries, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical standards.
- Knowledge of addiction recovery principles, peer support models, and community resources.
- Experience working with diverse populations and sensitivity to cultural, social, and individual differences.
- Reliable transportation and valid drivers license (preferred)
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $15.50 - $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
Schedule:
- Evening shift
- Every weekend
