General Description: To maintain the TVS Facilities and equipment and to enable each student, safe and efficient transportation.
Essential Functions:
- Ensure safety of students
- Oversee the proper operation of the heating plants
- Maintain buildings and grounds in a clean and presentable manner
- Organize and implement a program of preventative maintenance
- Order, receive, store, and distribute custodial/maintenance materials and equipment
- Perform personnel-related functions, e.g., select maintenance personnel, evaluate staff, recruit staff, plan schedules, etc.
- Inventory equipment and supplies
- Interpret blueprints, plans, and drawings
- Develop an in-service for custodial and maintenance personnel
- Supervise custodial, maintenance, and transportation staff
- Recommend materials and supplies needed for completing custodial and maintenance work
- Plan and organize cleaning
- Maintain records, e.g., safety and maintenance records, maintenance and cost records on district-owned vehicles, fuel-consumption by district owned vehicles, building and maintenance inspections records, paperwork to secure state funding for bus purchases, accident reports, etc.
- Help recruit new and substitute bus drivers
- Provide orientation to new bus drivers as to their routes, duties, and regulations
- Coordinate transportation for school field trips and athletic events
- Assign work to bus mechanics
- Purchase all materials and supplies needed for the transportation system
- Recommend needed equipment for district-owned buses and vehicles
- Develop, assign, and learn bus routes
- Develop and maintain fire and tornado preparedness, a bus safety program; immediately report accidents to superintendent
- Inspect school properties and make recommendations about repair, upkeep, cleaning needs, and damage beyond normal use
- Direct the maintenance and summer custodial program for school buildings and grounds.
- Arrange for outside companies and/or individuals to provide estimates and related work for repairs; provide follow-up inspections of completed work.
- Maintain and up-to-date record system of building maintenance and inspections
- Ensure that all school vehicles are in safe and good working order, including test drives
- Ensure that buses are prepared for annual State Highway Patrol inspection
- Advise superintendent as to road conditions and in decisions regarding the closing of school in inclement weather
- Submit a monthly report to board of education
- Drive bus routes, field trips, etc. in emergency situations when regular and/or substitute bus drivers are not available
- Ensure that the buildings are in compliance with fire and building codes
- Inspect and facilitate and operation of boilers
- Monitor bus routes to ensure equipment is being used efficiently and in the correct manner
- Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Organize and conduct safety orientation for bus drivers and hold periodic bus driver safety meetings
- Schedule routine maintenance of buses
- Ride with new bus drivers during their first several trips
- Ensure bus drivers have routine physical exams
- Ride/drive each bus to ensure safety
- Schedule the transportation of handicapped students
- Prepare specification and secure bids for bus purchases
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., staff records, drug testing information, personnel records
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
- Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude and conversation
- Attend meetings and in-services as required
- Attend work regularly and punctually
- Demonstrate a positive work ethic
- Work cooperatively with others in small groups
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure parents and students are aware of bus regulations
- Conduct parent conferences relative to transportation problems
- Ensure that route date, maps and pupil seating lists are maintained on each bus
- Create an information package for substitute drivers
- Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
- Instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent and/or board of education
Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Valid driver’s license and commercial driver’s license
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the superintendent and/or of education my find appropriate.
- Ability to work effectively with others
