DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oils all grippers on his or her set of machines at the beginning of each shift.
  • Ensures all guards and covers are on all the looms that he or she is responsible for. If guards or covers are needed, notifies the lead mechanic, the supervisor, or the department manager. It is the fixers responsibility.
  • Starts-up all warps that are tied-in during his or her shift. Performs and completes the loom maintenance sheet on each start up. When starting a new warp, checks the loom out thoroughly for any problem areas: ribbon worn out, gripper top worn, let-off belts in good condition, stroke set properly, etc.
  • Ensures assigned machines are running good efficiencies and good quality fabric. The fixer is responsible for fixing any defect in the fabric that is caused by the loom. Throughout a 12-hour shift performs repairs and/or adjustments for various problems, to include, but not limited to: broken heddles, dropped filling, broken picks, kinky or twisted filling, etc.
  • Looks after running looms when the operator takes breaks.
  • Reports to the lead mechanic, the supervisor, or the department manager any parts that are needed to repair the machines that are not in stock.
  • Repairs oil leaks on assigned machines.
  • Ensures all assigned looms are properly lubricated and oil levels are properly maintained.
  • Ensures all filling feeders and oilers are properly maintained and kept in working order.
  • Watches for quality problems in the fabric. Runs hand across the width of the fabric to feel for imperfections. Rubs in both warp and fill directions to determine if a defect is present, such as tight ends in the warp or heavy spots in the fill.
  • Looks for repeating defects. If found, stops the loom and corrects the problem. Alerts the weaver to the problem and follows-up soon after the repair/adjustment to ensure the problem has been corrected.
  • Looks up through the fabric to check for streaks or other visual distortions. If a problem exists, stops the loom, notifies the operator, and corrects the problem, if possible. If not, alerts the QC for that shift and informs the shift supervisor that there is a problem so that they can make a decision on what should be done.
  • Periodically performs preventive maintenance tasks based on PM sheets received from the Department Manager. Ensures all paperwork is timely, complete, accurate, and legible.
  • Communicates with on-coming shift regarding any problems encountered during the shift that have not been corrected properly.
  • Helps with housekeeping by maintaining a clean, safe work area. Cleans up behind himself by picking up all tools, gears, broken heddles or other parts lying on the floor, or by the take-ups, looms, or fixers tables and returning them to their proper storage areas.
  • Follows all safety requirements for the job and uses the required personal protective equipment supplied (safety glasses and hearing protection.) Reports any safety hazards that he or she sees to the supervisor.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisor or department manager.
