Tycko & Zavareei LLP, a mid-sized plaintiffs' civil litigation law firm, seeks a highly organized and detail-oriented Paralegal to join its Oakland, CA office, beginning April/May 2025, to aid in the litigation of important, impactful cases nationwide. 

This is a full-time, hybrid work opportunity, ideal for someone with experience in a professional legal support role who is accustomed to a fast-paced environment and able to hit the ground running by May (or earlier). Prior paralegal experience at a civil litigation law firm and/or experience with California state court systems is highly preferred.

Our Firm: We are a 22-attorney nationally recognized public interest civil litigation law firm, with offices in Washington, D.C. and California. Our Oakland, CA office is located above the 19th-street BART, and is the work base for our Bay Area team comprised of, on average, 4-5 attorneys and 1-2 legal staff. As a firm, we represent consumers fighting against corporate wrongdoing, whistleblowers exposing fraud, and others who are seeking justice against powerful interests—in large, complex, and impactful cases all around the country. Our Legal Staff: Our litigation support team, comprised of paralegals and legal assistants, is small yet mighty, and a critical cog in the firm’s operational wheel. These legal staff work closely with our attorneys in all aspects of litigation, from early case development through final resolution, and provide simultaneous support to multiple case teams. They are highly efficient, profuse with details, and masters of juggling multitudinous tasks to get the job (many jobs) done. 

ABOUT THE JOB
  • Position:        Paralegal (full-time, non-exempt)
  • Start Date:     April/May
  • Location:       Oakland, CA (hybrid; in-office work on average 1-3 days/week)
  • Schedule:      Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:30PM (40 hours/week, occasional overtime)
The Paralegal is a member of the firm's litigation support staff and reports to the Managing Partner. This role partners with other paralegals and legal assistants across offices to provide our attorneys with meaningful case assistance across all stages of litigation, from initiation to resolution, by performing case-management, organizational, drafting, research, coordination, and other substantive and administrative tasks as needed and delegated.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in gaining professional law firm experience to develop the skills required to be elevated to a senior paralegal role, and/or someone planning to apply to law school two or more years down the road (to start fall 2027 or later) and desiring exposure to an exciting legal environment. Our legal staff have gone on to attend some of the best law schools in the country, including Harvard, Columbia, NYU, University of Virginia, and Georgetown.

Responsibilities/Duties
  • Organize and maintain case files, internal records, and attorney calendars to reflect matter docket and deadlines
  • Draft and proofread correspondence, memos, and other communications
  • Manage and coordinate complex briefings and electronically file pleadings and motions in accordance with court local rules and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Act as a reference point for California state court filings
  • Routinely communicates with attorneys, clients, and co-counsel about case status and preparation
  • Assist attorneys with propounding and responding to discovery (interrogatories, requests for admissions, and request for production, subpoenas, and preparing deposition binders)
  • Conduct client intakes and conduct case intake calls; speak with class members
  • Perform basic legal factual research using Westlaw and online resources
  • Work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively in a team environment
  • Assist attorneys and other teammates on special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Provide ad hoc assistance to California office operations
Qualifications

Education/Experience
  • Required:
    • Bachelor's degree (or other college degree/certification together with substantial professional paralegal work experience)
    • Either:  Minimum one year of work in a professional legal support role under the direct supervision of a licensed California attorney  -or- Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program (must provide completion record)
    • Minimum one year of professional office experience; experience in a law firm setting is preferred

    • Solid understanding of civil litigation processes, including state and federal deadlines and rules
    • Experience using PACER and e-filing court systems
    • Experience using Westlaw (or other legal research software)
    • Bluebooking skills
    • Experience with time tracking/legal billing
Compensation
  • Hourly (minimum 40 hours per week); Non-Exempt
  • Anticipated Base Rate: $30.75–$33.15/hour (commensurate with experience)
  • Time-and-one-half overtime pay
