The Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Locator is responsible for accurately locating and tracking the drill head during HDD operations. The Locator plays a critical role in guiding the drill operator to ensure that the bore follows the designed path while avoiding underground utilities and obstacles. The HDD Operator will collaboration with the locator is responsible for operating the horizontal drilling equipment to execute precise drilling tasks. These positions require proficiency in operating either locating or drilling equipment and the ability to work closely with the drilling team to maintain safe and efficient job site practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Locating: Use locating equipment (Falcon F5) to track the drill head and provide accurate information on its location and trajectory.
- Operating: Use Vermeer Drill 20x22 and/or 24/40 to execute precise drilling tasks
- Utility Detection: Identify and mark underground utilities using the appropriate detection tools before drilling begins.
- Communication: Communicate continuously with the drill operator, providing real-time guidance to ensure the drill head stays on the designed bore path.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of the bore path, drill logs, and other relevant documentation.
- Site Safety: Ensure that drilling operations are conducted safely and in accordance with company policies and industry standards.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform basic maintenance on locating equipment and troubleshoot issues when necessary.
- Problem Solving: Assist the team in resolving issues related to underground conditions, obstacles, or other unexpected challenges encountered during the drilling process.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of experience in Horizontal Directional Drilling, with at least 1 year as a Locator or Operating
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (required). Trade school or technical certifications in HDD operations or construction (preferred).
- Skills:
- Proficiency in using locating equipment such as DCI Falcon.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility maps, and project drawings.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in HDD.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, lift heavy equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with trenchless technology and utility installation methods.
- CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) or ability to obtain one in the future.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor construction sites, subject to weather conditions.
- Occasional extended hours or weekend work may be required to meet project deadlines.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
