DESCRIPTION
This Head Coach, TJC Cheer is a full-time, 12-month position with evening and weekend hours required. This position serves as Head Cheerleading Coach for the Tyler Junior College to provide a visible, positive presence to promote school spirit at athletic, community and campus-wide events. The Head Cheerleading Coach is responsible for tryouts, pre-season training, all games, practices, appearances, performances and workouts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Participating in all college activities which lead to student recruitment, retention and completion;
- Serving as sponsor, mentor, and coach for the Tyler Junior College Cheerleaders;
- Preparing, organizing and coaching at all practices, performances, appearances, competitions, and off-season trainings;
- Promoting a spirit of cooperation and collaboration between, but not limited to, the TJC Cheerleaders, Apache Athletics, Apache Belles, and Apache Band;
- Marketing the TJC Cheerleading program and College mascot to the public through community service, maintaining the website and social media platforms;
- Maintaining, inventorying, and ordering all supplies, practice wear, gear, signs, uniforms, etc.;
- Handling all travel arrangements for the team, as well as traveling with the squad to and from events as needed, including athletic games, camp, performances, competitions, etc.
- Overseeing, recruiting, and scheduling appearances and performances of the college mascot at various events, functions, and games to create a collegiate atmosphere and game day experience;
- Recruiting cheerleader and mascot candidates including, but not limited to, visiting and communicating with regional and national high schools, local gyms, and other cheer related programs;
- Hosting recruit clinics and conducting tryouts to select cheerleaders each year, as well as those serving as mascot;
- Monitoring and maintaining expenses and incoming funds to remain within budget limitations, as well as formulate and implement fundraising tactics to raise funds for cheer program.
- Coordinating all aspects of collegiate competition and camp, including but not limited to, choreography, music, travel arrangements, meals, lodging and supplies;
- Providing a healthy and safe environment for cheerleaders and participants per established College policies and procedures, while collaborating with athletic trainer(s) for the team’s nutrition, exercise and conditioning;
- Monitoring athletic development, as well as all student athletes’ academic performance by hosting study hours and checking registration;
- Working closely with TJC Alumni Affairs and Institutional Advancement in the development of the Cheerleading Alumni program;
- Planning and coordinating a youth cheer camp and/or summer camp for community members to attend;
- Assisting with Center for Student Life & Involvement events, as needed;
- Performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Life.
Competencies
Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of college student development and knowledge of current trends in cheerleading;
- Demonstrate organizational and planning skills;
- Experience advising student organizations or supervisory skills;
- Possess effective communication skills required: speaking and writing;
- Ability to demonstrate, teach and critique the technical skills associated with collegiate cheer team.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in a related field;
- 2 years of coaching experience at the professional, college or high school level;
- Knowledge of USA Cheer safety standards and must be USA Cheer safety certified or must be willing to obtain immediately upon hire.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Master’s degree in a related field;
- 4 years of coaching experience at the professional, college or high school level;
- Experience overseeing and managing a budget with proven experience in fundraising.
Required Credentials/Licensures
- Certification through National Cheerleading Association as a cheerleading sponsor or coach;

EXPECTATIONS
- Must be able to travel and work evenings, weekends and holidays, as required;
- Live within Smith County, or 30-mile radius of Tyler Junior College to allow for regular participation in community and college activities;
