Description
A Student Assistant (SA) at TJC plays an important role in promoting the mission of the department / office and college. The SA is required to assist the classroom teacher in the care and development of young children in a childcare setting while carrying out duties and responsibilities necessary for the welfare of both the children and center function.
Essential Functions and Duties
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision and care for children ages 6 weeks-5years. Including changing soiled clothes and diapers.
Communicate well with lead teacher and follow directions as the teacher provides them such as implementing curriculum, providing classroom management and maintaining the classroom as needed.
Implement curriculum including but not limited to, reading to the children, leading a small group, and directing outdoor activities.
Provide classroom management for children ages 6 weeks-5years.
Prepare snacks and assist with food distribution including clean up.
General upkeep of classroom, bathroom and outdoor learning environment. Including but not limited to sweeping, mopping and cleaning of all surfaces.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
Must know and consistently meet Texas Minimum Standards for Licensed Child Care Centers established by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services Child Care Licensing Division
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTIES
Reports directly to the classroom teacher
Work Environment :
Physical Demands :
Sitting, walking, standing, lifting (up to 50lbs) for extended periods of time. Ability to maneuver stairs and physically moving objects from one location to another (up to 50lbs) by carrying, pushing or pulling.
Travel Required : Must have reliable transportation
If travel is required, candidate must have and maintain a current valid Texas driver's license and an acceptable driving record
Qualifications
Students must be registered for undergraduate classes and maintain enrollment status to work in these positions. Students may qualify for Federal Work Study, which will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
Additional Job Specific Requirements
Some knowledge of childcare and child development preferred.
Must be able to pass a background check.
Must be 18 years of age or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
