Position Overview
The Structural Engineering Manager will report directly to the President and be responsible for leading the Charlotte branch’s engineering and field services teams. This role is pivotal in driving business growth, operational efficiency, and team development. The ideal candidate will oversee engineering plans, field operations, and process standardization, ensuring the team meets financial and operational performance targets. This role requires strong leadership, problem-solving, and technical expertise to scale our structural engineering services effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Lead the Charlotte Structural Engineering and Field Technician teams to ensure timely, high-quality, and cost-effective project completion.
- Develop and execute annual, quarterly, and monthly operational plans to align with business growth objectives.
- Establish and maintain process standards (SOPs) and task checklists to ensure operational consistency and efficiency.
- Participate in business leadership forums to drive strategy, review team performance, and optimize workflows.
- Monitor workload distribution and identify when additional team members or outsourced resources are required.
Financial & Business Performance
- Manage revenue and expense budgets for the Charlotte Structural Engineering and Field Services departments, aiming for a minimum 12% net margin.
- Contribute to business development by fostering client relationships, identifying new business opportunities, and participating in professional organizations.
- Support proposal development and opportunity tracking to drive revenue growth.
Team Development & Training
- Recruit, hire, and develop engineers and field technicians, ensuring a strong, high-performing team.
- Implement training programs and mentor employees to improve their technical and leadership skills.
- Develop core competency models and performance objectives for all team members, aligning them with long-term company goals.
Quality & Process Improvement
- Ensure compliance with structural engineering standards, building codes, and company best practices.
- Oversee project reviews, sealing processes, and client handoff procedures to maintain high-quality work and customer satisfaction.
- Collaborate with the Raleigh branch to align Charlotte’s processes with company-wide standards.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE).
- North Carolina Professional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to pursue reciprocal P.E. license)
- 9-12 years of engineering experience, with at least 5-7 years in structural engineering and/or field technician management.
- CAD proficiency, with the ability to train and mentor others.
- Experience in hiring, training, and developing teams.
- Proven ability to develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- 2-4 years of experience in residential (or wood-framed) structural engineering and field services.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Ethical, professional, and customer-focused mindset.
Preferred:
- Experience developing and implementing training programs and process standards.
- 3-5 years of commercial structural engineering experience.
- Business development experience or the ability to cultivate client relationships.
