Job Title: Library Circulation Desk Assistant and Cataloger
General Function:
The Library Circulation Desk Assistant and Cataloger is an hourly position, reporting directly to the Library Director. The primary responsibilities include circulation desk duties—such as checking in and checking out library materials, issuing library cards, collecting fines/fees, assisting patrons with computer needs, maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the library collection—and cataloging. The Library Circulation Desk Assistant and Cataloger must possess strong interpersonal skills, excellent customer service skills, and proficient computer skills. This role is ideal for candidates looking to grow their skills in library sciences and contribute to their local community.
Hours and Compensation:
- Hourly rate: $12
- Part-time position: 25 hours per week on a rotating two-week schedule.
Schedule A (2 weeks):
- Wednesday: 9:45 AM - 5:00 PM
- Thursday: 11:45 AM - 7:00 PM
- Friday: 9:45 AM - 3:00 PM
- Saturday: 9:45 AM - 3:00 PM
Schedule B (2 weeks):
- Monday: 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM
- Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
- Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
- Thursday: 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Background Checks and Clearances Required:
- Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check
- Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
- FBI Criminal Background Check
All clearances must be obtained by any applicant prior to hire. Mandated Reporter Training will be completed after employment begins.
Functions and Responsibilities
As Circulation Desk Assistant:
- Assists patrons at the service desk and over the telephone with procedures related to the circulation of library materials.
- Searches library stacks and other areas for claimed returned, lost, missing, or other items as needed.
- Greets and directs patrons in the library.
- Provides basic technology assistance to patrons, including computer guidance and troubleshooting.
- Assists patrons with ready-reference questions, reader advisory, bibliographic instruction, and database searching.
- Assists patrons with faxing, scanning, and copying materials using appropriate library technology.
- Addresses and resolves issues with disruptive or problem patrons, enforcing library policies as needed.
- Maintains positive relations and courteous interaction with the public, staff, and volunteers.
- Performs opening and closing procedures as needed.
- Attends staff meetings, workshops, training, and seminars as appropriate.
As Cataloger:
- Performs copy cataloging of all formats of library materials to facilitate their identification, access, and use.
- Interprets and applies Library of Congress subject headings, the Dewey Decimal System, AACR2, RDA, and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials.
- Consults with libraries to resolve cataloging and database problems, report trends in bibliographic services, answer questions, and transmit information.
- Develops displays to highlight and promote areas of the collection.
- Monitors used book donations to determine whether items should be added to the collection or placed for sale.
- Covers and labels books to prepare them for use by the public.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of professional public library principles, practices, and functions.
- Ability to provide courteous public service and clear explanations of established policies and procedures.
- Willingness and ability to make logical exceptions to library policies when warranted.
- Accurate shelving of materials in alphanumeric order.
- Ability to think and act appropriately under pressure.
- Strong multitasking skills and ability to handle interruptions.
- Positive attitude and ability to work effectively in a team setting.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, internet searching, Google Suite, and Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Familiarity with office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, and scanners.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong desire to serve the public with friendliness, tact, and diplomacy.
- Willingness to assist and support coworkers, contribute ideas, maintain flexibility, and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
- Working knowledge of reader interest levels, books, authors, and library collections.
Physical Demands
- Physical capacity to place materials on shelves at all shelving heights.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
Additional Duties
- Participates in maintaining a clean and safe library environment, including light cleaning tasks and occasional minor snow removal as part of a team effort.
- Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the library.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in library science or related field preferred.
- Experience in a public library setting highly valued.
- Must have excellent computer and communication skills.
