This position is primarily responsible for supporting Animal Welfare (AW) programs in accordance with both company policies and national standards for animal care and handling. Key responsibilities include:
- Performing animal welfare and handling audits.
- Assisting in the development and management of best practice training programs.
- Reviewing AW trends within the assigned production areas.
- Promoting effective communication across departments.
- Assisting with the creation and refinement of AW training materials.
- Facilitating training for personnel who work directly with live animals.
- Delivering training to ensure staff understand best practices and AW expectations.
- Verifying compliance by ensuring training is completed and understood, particularly through direct communication during audits.
- Conducting both scheduled and unannounced audits to verify compliance with AW programs and industry standards.
- Performing process audits to assess proper animal handling and the humane transportation of live hogs.
- Providing constructive feedback and communicating audit results with production managers.
- Recording audit findings in the company’s database.
- Assisting with the execution of third-party AW audits within assigned areas.
- Collaborating with business leaders (e.g., complex managers, procurement managers) and communicating directly with production departments after each AW visit or audit.
- Supporting the QA team with internal projects, research trials, training initiatives, and the evaluation of new technologies to advance animal welfare.
Physical Requirements:
- Must use safe lifting techniques.
- Regular activities include standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, reaching, balancing, stooping, talking, and hearing.
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Must follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE as designated by company policy.
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
- Minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in the field, or a degree with limited experience.
Accountability/Role:
- This is a professional-level position requiring a solid understanding of animal welfare principles.
- Must be able to work independently on moderately complex assignments with minimal supervision.
- Requires the ability to interpret and adapt established procedures across diverse situations.
Computer Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required.
- Experience in developing training programs and training videos is a plus.
Travel:
- Overnight travel and occasional night work required.
Additional Requirements:
- No jewelry is allowed on the production floor.
- Adherence to the Company’s Animal Welfare Policy is mandatory at all times.
