About the Office

The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming has a position available for an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in our Criminal Division. The District of Wyoming encompasses a large and diverse geographical area of 97,914 square miles and a relatively small population of about 588,283. The United States Attorney’s Office employs 16 Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs), including four managing attorneys. Six Criminal Division AUSAs are located in our headquarters office in Cheyenne, two are located in our Casper branch office, three are located in our Lander branch office, and one is located in our Yellowstone National Park office.

This AUSA vacancy is located in Cheyenne, which is Wyoming’s capital and largest city.

More information on the District of Wyoming can be found at http://www.justice.gov/usao/wy/. Additional information on the State of Wyoming’s outdoor and cultural attractions can be found at http://www.travelwyoming.com.

Job Description

Criminal Division AUSAs prosecute federal crimes committed in Wyoming, including violent crimes, drug trafficking, child exploitation, fraud and other white-collar offenses, firearms offenses, civil rights offenses, human trafficking, terrorism, public corruption, major crimes committed on the Wind River Indian Reservation, and petty offenses committed on federal property. As federal prosecutors, AUSAs advise law enforcement during investigations, make charging decisions, appear before the grand jury, research and write motions and other criminal pleadings, conduct hearings and jury trials, and defend convictions on appeal and collateral review.

The office has one opening for an experienced prosecutor to serve as an AUSA in the Criminal Division in our Cheyenne office. Due to the small number of Criminal Division AUSAs employed in the District of Wyoming, each AUSA handles a variety of cases and opportunities to specialize may be limited. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.

All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
