Summary

This position serves as the Maintenance Mechanic for the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center (OBVAMC). The OBVAMC covers 48 /- acres and approximately 720,000 gross building square footage and has three CBOC locations, Longview and Texarkana, Texas, and Monroe, Louisiana. This position works under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor in the Night Construction Shop in the Maintenance and Operations Section.

Duties

  • Performs journeymen level trades which include carpentry, masonry, tile setting, painting, plastering, roofing, steel stud framing, drywall installation and finishing, carpentry and dust control measures
  • Works with casework, suspended ceiling systems, various flooring and accessories used in medical offices, exam, procedure and operating rooms
  • Constructs, alters, repairs, and modifies a variety of cabinetry, furniture, and items made of metal, wood, plastics, composites, masonry, and fabrics
  • Installs window frames, doors, outside/inside trims
  • Paints interior/exterior of buildings or equipment
  • Prepares surfaces, mixes paint, applies primer, intermediate and finish coat with a brush, roller or spray gun
  • Sets up and operates various wood working tools and electric or cordless machines
  • Determines appropriate methods and techniques utilizing various tools, devices, and materials to complete assigned tasks
  • Surveys job sites and recommends best practices to complete assigned task and determine suitable materials



Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm; Subject to change based on the needs of the facility/service.

Physical Requirements: Work in areas/confined spaces where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present and may include, but not limited to fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing/non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals. Ensure safety, health, and personnel protection programs maintained consistent with laws and regulations. Will be required to wear respirators, be physically able to perform assigned work and operate safety equipment. Typical safety equipment required by the trade is safety shoes and glasses, respirators, protective clothing, and hard hats. Duties performed include lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping and working in cramped positions.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading)
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.
  • Knowledge of Materials
  • Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)
  • Use of Measuring Instruments



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.



Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
