This position is located in the Environmental Management Service (EMS) with the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Manchester, NH.

Duties

Major duties:

  • Drives pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, 26 foot moving van, sedans, or a crew cab pickup truck, which will have an approximate gross vehicle weight up to 4,500 kilograms (10,000 pounds);
  • Drives vehicles based on specific trip assignments including regular schedules and special requests throughout rural and urban areas.
  • Loads and unloads the vehicles by hand, sometimes receiving help from other workers.
  • Load from the warehouse using forklift equipment as necessary and transporting to the required remote locations daily.
  • Ensures the cargo is protected from weather and that it is properly distributed and secured to prevent damage or loss during transit.
  • Inventories the stock of furniture at the warehouse, identifies component shortages for replenishment orders, confirms receipt of orders, identifies discrepancies including improper items received, shortage of items delivered, wrong products, damage to shipment, etc.
  • Assists in identifying and forecasting the need for various medical center and CBOC furnishings based on program changes.
  • Tracks and monitors furniture needs which supports the working environment of the employees.
  • Adjusts and changes in layouts and work site for effective and safe use of furnishings and adjusts workstations in all areas of the centers daily.
  • Reads, understands, and applies instructions contained in various manuals, blueprints, specifications, etc.
  • Moves and installs furniture and equipment which may include partial or complete assembly using hand and power tools.
  • Works and collaborates with interior designers on proper furnishings that meet infection control requirements, standardized goals, as well as provide well-coordinated furniture compatible with floors, walls, and patient needs.
  • Performs housekeeping duties as a backup when organizational needs dictate.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm, weekends as necessary

Qualifications

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT:All applicants must possess a valid driver's license to operate various types of motor vehicles.(Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview.)

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Required to drive a truck for several hours to reach the remote location of service. Incumbent is required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, climb and stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. They may lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, with heavier items being moved with handling equipment or the assistance of other workers. She/he moves supplies and materials with pallet jacks, forklifts and through physical labor. During travel, considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. The duties require considerable dexterity, hand, foot and eye coordination, and concentration.

WORK CONDITIONS: This position will operate motor vehicles in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Incumbent works both outdoors and indoors, including areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, and/or poorly lighted. Regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. Appropriate protective gear (e.g., gloves, support belt, steel toe shoes) will be supplied and shall always be utilized by the material handler to minimize such risks. Must be able to sit for long periods of time while driving and is exposed to road hazard conditions daily. The incumbent will apply all established safety practices, will report unsafe conditions and unsafe practices to the supervisor and will report any occupational injury or illness in a prompt practical manner.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
