Summary

This position is at the full performance level located at the Raymond G. Murphy Medical Center, Albuquerque New Mexico Plumbing Unit of the Maintenance and Operations section for the Facilities Management Service. The NMVAHCS encompasses 93 acres with 69 buildings and approximately 1.2 million square feet. The incumbent is responsible for all plumbing and pipefitting duties throughout the whole NMVAHCS, and to keep in compliance with numerous directives and entities.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to:

  • The incumbent will perform all pipefitting duties within the shop, will provide support to Internal Project shop with construction needs regarding pipefitting duties. Incumbent must have the ability to do precise, artistic and theoretical practices while performing duties.
  • Incumbent is responsible for repairs, installations, modifications, maintenance, troubleshoots, tests and adjusts/overhauls and performs preventative maintenance on a wide variety of medical, dental, laboratory, kitchen, morgue, laundry and engineering equipment. The engineering equipment is hydraulic, pneumatic, medical gases and mechanical units using collars, shafts, pulleys and sprockets and chains. It is highly desirable for incumbent to have certifications in: Back flow testing, installation for medical gases, medical gases, water operator, jurneyman plumbing license.
  • The incumbent will be responsible for trouble shooting repairs, replacing or modifying laundry equipment such as industrial/residential use washer dryers, tumblers, steam tunnels, flat work ironers, cross folders, spreader-feeders and related laundry equipment to keep the equipment in proper operating condition. Medical gas manifolds that contain pressure regulators, shuttle cocks and check valves; laboratory equipment that contains high pressure steam, traps and related controls; medical equipment that contains collars, shafts and hydraulics, dental equipment that contains pneumatics and switching collars; morgue equipment that contains vacuum pistons and backflow devices; engineering equipment that contains high pressure controls, solenoid valves, switching devices, high speed regulators, separators and receivers, plumbing and welding inclusive. These are complex systems that require special knowledge of the Plumbing trade.
  • The incumbent will perform water treatment of soft water system, and maintain PH, Chlorine and Alkalinity of Large Patient Therapy pool including required documentation. Incumbent will test, monitor, trouble shoot and repair associated equipment to ensure compliance with the Legionella Directive. The tradesman will need special certification to complete these tasks.
  • Must be able to attain certification within one year of employment.
  • The incumbent will maintain, service and perform preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment to included Reverse Osmosis Systems and Deionized water systems. The incumbent will perform maintenance on Grease Traps, miscellaneous sized watermains and chilled water lines. Incumbent will perform maintenance and repair as well as preventive maintenance on Fire Suppression systems.
  • Incumbent will document and maintain preventive maintenance documentation for the established program to ensure compliance with directives and Joint Commission requirements. Incumbent must be able to install, repair, and maintain various types of pipping systems.
  • Incumbent will service and maintain equipment on storm and sanitary sewer to include lift stations and float controls. Incumbent will perform maintenance both scheduled, unscheduled on Fire Hydrants, and Fire Department connections.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00AM to 3:30PM

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. For example but is not limited to the following knowledge, skills, and ability: installs, repairs and maintains high pressure piping systems, works plans band lays out work from blueprints, drawings, technical manuals or specifications, and works with a variety of pipe and pipe fittings including those made of copper, brass, lead, glass and plastic. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, packs and joins piping to pipe fittings.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The operators usual work will involve stooping, standing, bending and frequently working in a cramped awkward position or prolonged periods in varying conditions. The position involves heavy work with assistance by other employees or equipment, occasionally lifting of 100 pounds with frequent lifting and or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Work can be inside or outside in temperature extremes of well bellowing freezing to over 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Work areas can be dirty, greasy, dusty possibly with exposures to fumes. Other uncomfortable areas may include tunnels, mechanical rooms and interstitial spaces. All Personal Protective Equipment must be utilized appropriately.
