Work Schedule:
Full-time; Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

  • Duties include but may not be limited to:
  • Performs a variety of duties involved in the fabrication of prescription eyeglasses.
  • Operates all machinery and equipment involved in the production of eyeglasses, in a safe manner.
  • Complies with all safety and housekeeping rules and ensures that assigned area of the Optical Fabrication Laboratory are properly cleaned and maintained daily.
  • Performs inventory management involving ordering supplies and storage of lens and frame stock, conducts physical inventories, restocks supply points.
  • Receives frames, lenses and consumable supplies and puts them in the correct storage area.
  • Verifies orders for accuracy and completeness.
  • Keeps a running inventory of lens, frames and consumable supplies.

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of WG-05. At the WG-03 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of WG-05. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Prescription Eyeglass Maker Helper normally works with small, light items and may be required to lift up to 25 pounds on occasion. Depending on assignment, the employee may sit or stand for extended periods of time. Close eye and hand coordination is required. Employee will work indoors in a climate-controlled environment. The employee is subject to occasional cuts, bruises, abrasions, burns, and high noise levels.

For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
