Major duties include, but are not limited to:
- As a member of leadership staff, attends and participates in regular and special staff conferences and committee meetings. The SPS Chief is responsible for a complete program of planned reusable medical equipment replacement as well as advising construction projects to ensure that RMD is properly considered during the planning and execution processes.
- Utilizes teams to maximum advantage in carrying out the service mission. Works in conjunction with and within the RMD Committee to oversee and ensure the success of the wards, clinics and CBOCs to execute the requirements of the VHA Directives and SFVAHCS policies regarding RMD.
- In directing the Sterile Processing Department staff, the incumbent evaluates and reviews evaluations of employees. Makes decisions on work problems presented by subordinates including complaints, grievances, and proposing disciplinary actions. Delegates authority and responsibility for day-to-day actions required in operation of the various sections within the programs.
- Advises the Associate Director, Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive on any decisions that impact or require SPS-related functions or support, including the purchase and lease of any medical equipment requiring reprocessing or consumable supplies; and any facility construction projects where medical equipment is used or reprocessed.
- Participates in leadership activities for formal and informal planning, budget and program meetings involving the establishment of policies and decisions. Provides technical advice during exploratory and informative stages of managerial planning, policy formulation and decision-making action.
- An active member of multiple local, VISN and national committees including but not limited to: VISN 23 SPS Management Board, ISO 9001, Facility RMD Committee, ICC Committee, Critical Care and Resuscitation Committee, MEC Committee, Contracts, Clinical Product and Equipment Review Committee, VACO National Central Office of Sterile Processing, and periodic ad hoc task forces or planning committees.
- Maintains an efficient and effective department, initiating systematic program reviews and critical evaluations of key functions based on ISO 9001 standards, ensuring organizational compliance. Revises or implements new procedures and/or organizational changes for improved quality of the SPS and RMD programs. Plans, organizes and conducts training programs to ensure staff competency and where appropriate for the guidance of the operating services.
- Responsible for ensuring that specific processes and procedures (SOPs) regarding the setup, use and reprocessing of RMD conform to the specific manufacturer's instructions, infection control procedures, sterilization guidelines and local guidelines are in place for any given RMD, to include newly fielded RMD; that SOPs are posted where RMD is setup, used and/or reprocessed; that SOPs are updated as necessary to reflect updated guidance; that document control systems are in place ensuring that SOPs, corresponding competencies and manufacturers' instructions are in concert; and, that outdated SOPs and corresponding competencies are retained.
- Makes certain that all personnel setting up, using and/or reprocessing any medical equipment have been initially trained according to the SOPs, trained in standard infection control methods to protect both patients and themselves, have been retrained and competency reestablished when SOPs are changed, are retrained and recertified on an annual basis and continually evaluated to ensure that they are demonstrating proficiency in all reprocessing activities and meeting all critical elements in their performance standards relating to RMD.
