POSITION OVERVIEW

The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Office for the District of Arizona is seeking qualified, self-motivated individuals with excellent interpersonal skills and strong work ethic for the position of Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer in the Pretrial Services Division in the Yuma Office. 


A Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer administratively and technically supervises probation officers on a day-to-day basis in accomplishing the work of a Pretrial Services Division.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

A Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer in the Pretrial Services Division performs the following duties and responsibilities:
  • Confers regularly with staff to provide direction and assistance in case situations and with general operational procedures.
  • Serves as a resource for officers and other staff to assist with performing work successfully and efficiently. 
  • Reviews and edits written work, including case plans, correspondence, and reports submitted to the court, ensuring that recommendations made by officers to the court adhere to local and national policy and guidelines. 
  • Ensures adequate coverage for office activities, court appearances, conducts audits and reviews of case work. 
  • Develops recommendations and advises the court on appropriate issues. 
  • Assists in monitoring the work of vendors and contractors, including negotiating terms of agreement, evaluating work, ensuring that contract terms are met, and related activities. 
  • Communicates and responds to executive management requests regarding case operations. 
  • Answers procedural questions for judges, staff, and the public. Provides customer service and resolves difficulties while complying with regulations, rules, and procedures. Adheres to the presumption of innocence and least restrictive supervision practices. 
  • Performs any or all duties of a pretrial services officer, including investigating and/or supervising offenders/defendants. 
  • Travel may be required. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field of academic study, such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, or business or public administration which provides evidence of the capacity to understand and apply the legal requirements and human relations skills involved in the position. Must have excellent writing skills and above average computer knowledge and skills. Must have at least three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience, gained after completion of a bachelor's degree, in such fields as probation, pretrial services, parole, corrections, criminal investigations, or work in substance/addiction treatment, including at least one (1) year as a CL-28 probation/pretrial services officer in the U.S. Courts. 

 

For placement at CL-30 level, applicants must have three years of progressively responsible experience gained after completion of a bachelor’s degree, including at least one year as a CL-29 probation/pretrial services officer in the U.S. courts. This experience must have included progressively responsible administrative, technical, professional, supervisory or managerial experience that provided an opportunity to gain (a) skill in dealing with others in person-to-person work relationships, (b) the ability to exercise mature judgment, and (c) a knowledge of the basic concepts, principles, and theories of management and the ability to understand the managerial policies applicable to the Pretrial Services Division.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to applicants who have more than five (5) years specialized experience with the U.S. Pretrial Services in any specialty area such as drug and alcohol treatment, location monitoring, etc., or worked in a specialty area and developed a special project; and who have a master's degree or who are pursuing a master's degree program.

Salary : $84,284 - $161,910
