SAFETY COORDINATOR

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and implementing the Company’s safety, health, and environmental protection programs on the designated project(s), in support of our core value “to ensure a safe working environment”.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Under the supervision of the regional Safety Director, ensures that all corporate safety, health and environmental programs and policies are implemented on the designated project site.
  • Coordinates site-specific safety orientation programs in accordance with established corporate programs
  • Conducts special safety trainings such as fall protection, man lift, forklift, powder actuated tools, lockout and confined space.
  • Collaborates with project management and field leadership to provide safety-related technical and administration direction to field personnel.
  • Reviews the General Contractor / Owner safety program for projects, and understands the differences with U.S. Engineering’s safety program; informs team members of adherence to the more stringent requirements.
  • In partnership with other project leaders, participates in daily Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reviews / meetings.
  • In partnership with other project leaders, coordinates safety MOPs (Method of Procedure) and AHAs (Activity Hazard Analysis), including writing, approving and reviewing and overseeing the work by crews.
  • Controls hazardous working conditions, “near misses”, and unsafe team member activities through interface with project management and field supervision personnel.
  • Conducts pro-active work area surveillance inspections, air sampling tests for confined space entry, property damage and personal injury investigations, and prepares affiliated reports.
  • Attends daily “stretch & flex” to monitor compliance with this element of the Company’s safety program.
  • Documents all accidents, safety violations, unsafe conditions / activities. Compiles data, photographs, and all pertinent forms and reports per program procedures and federal, state, local regulations.
  • Issues confined area entry and “hot work” permits as required.
  • Monitors high risk activities, such as shaft work, roof work, excavations, and critical lifts.
  • Ensures that the project site is supplied with all necessary Safety and First Aid supplies, as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Accompanies safety, health and insurance inspections on walk through tours as required.
  • Assists in preparing written appeals for safety violation citations, as necessary
  • Coordinates and monitors all subcontractor compliance with safety programs. Also, works closely with other contractors’ site safety personnel to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Keeps current on construction industry safety standards and makes recommendations to regional Safety Director on best practices as appropriate.
  • Following an injury, coordinates and assists in emergency or medical treatment operations as required.
  • Coordinates implementation of corporate safety recognition programs that effectively reward team members for ensuring a safe working environment. Regularly communicates the status of project safety records to regional Safety Director.

Job Scope:

  • The Safety Coordinator is responsible for oversight of all safety related programs on one or more designated project sites. Projects range in size, but may exceed $50 million in mechanical contract value, with approximately 100 team members. The Safety Coordinator will work under the supervision of the regional Safety Director, and will partner with other project leadership, such as Project Managers, Field Superintendents / Foreman, etc

Education & Experience:

  • 0-5 years of related experience in the construction industry is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or related field is preferred

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Understanding of federal, state, and local construction safety regulations. Ability to interpret and apply OSHA regulations, local building codes, and other applicable standards.

  • Understanding of construction industry practices, processes, and standards and associated safety best practices.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement necessary corrective measures
  • Excellent team collaboration and communication skills.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, such as diplomacy, persuasion, assertiveness and managerial courage.
  • Skill in facilitating effective individual and group learning. This includes the ability to assist in the development of effective training programs, deliver the necessary content, and evaluate and consistently aid in improvement of the programs.
  • Excellent ability to establish and foster effective professional relationships with others, including team members at all levels of the company, vendors, contractors, etc.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Physical and/or travel demands:

  • Job is performed in a combination of settings, mostly on construction project sites.
  • Routine driving to local/regional project sites required.
  • Physical demands include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, bending, kneeling, lifting, etc. Position also includes sitting and standing, use of telephone, keyboard, and computer monitor and iPad.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • The range for this position has been established at $33.04 - $46.67 per year and is U.S. Engineering’s good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of the posting. The compensation offered to the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training
  • Your total compensation will go beyond the number on your paycheck. Team members are eligible for a year-end bonus based on company and/or individual performance as well as paid time off. An industry-leading benefits package including health, dental, and vision plans, and retirement
