Position Description
A Democratic Congresswoman is seeking an experienced, organized and highly motivated Legislative Director to lead her office’s legislative work and strategy. The Legislative Director provides visionary and strategic planning on legislative priorities and helps with implementation of these priorities based on the district, member and office goals. The Legislative Director will be responsible for leading implementation of the district and Representatives core issues which include economic justice, environmental justice, housing affordability, corporate accountability and so much more.
Responsibilities
The Legislative Director will also be responsible for managing the legislative team and the congresswoman’s responsibilities on House Financial Services Committee and Committee on Oversight and Accountability. This team member will also be responsible for maintaining and cultivating relationships with district stakeholders to advance legislative priorities for the district. The Legislative Director manages and works closely with an active legislative staff and facilitates communication between legislative staff and all other office teams. The role also requires close coordination with House leadership staff, Administration staff, and various caucus staff across Capitol Hill. Candidate must also demonstrate an ability to work in a shared team setting and can inspire a dynamic and energetic group of legislative team members.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Supporting the entire legislative staff to implement the Member's legislative goals & address issues aligned with needs of the district, including by developing bills, amendments, advocacy letters, constituent letters, briefings, and events;
• Leading initiatives to support Rep. Tlaib’s Get the Lead Out Caucus and Congressional Mamas’ Caucus, and serving as a liaison between the office and other caucuses and organizations;
• Leading the annual appropriations process and outreach strategy for the office;
• Monitoring legislative activity on the House floor, staffing the Congresswoman for floor votes, and attending meetings on behalf of the Congresswoman with stakeholders and constituents;
• Working with stakeholders & constituencies on the introduction of relevant legislation and monitoring progression of bills on key issues;
• Providing mentorship and managing the legislative team, including assigning and monitoring issue areas, providing mentorship, and training and onboarding all legislative staff as required;
• Scheduling and leading legislative staff meetings, including follow ups and monitoring progress of legislative tasks from meetings, and leading check-ins with team members to monitor progress on legislative work and priorities;
• Work with our office Senior Policy Counsel to support the work of the Member’s district-based legislative workgroups, including the Housing Justice Workgroup, Environmental Justice Workgroup, and the Justice for All Workgroup;
• Writing legislative memos; reviewing and editing remarks and memos written by staff;
• Supporting legislative team hiring process;
• Review written legislative correspondence;
Qualifications
Qualifications for this position include strong organization and time management skills, polished and professional writing, robust leadership, mentorship and management abilities, proactive and creative problem-solving, and the ability to operate and deliver under tight deadlines in high-pressure situations. This role also requires a strong understanding of the legislative process, and 2-3 years of Hill experience minimum is required.
Candidates without Hill experience will not be considered.
Well-qualified candidates will have strong relationships with progressive stakeholders and other congressional offices. A strong commitment to progressive ideals is necessary to thrive in this role.
A passion for human rights, economic and social justice and grassroots organizing are also important.
