Duties

  • You will collect, record, and organize biological data for use by management.
  • You will mark endangered species habitat sites with paint, signs, and flagging materials.
  • You will perform routine maintenance of Red-cockaded Woodpecker cavity trees through manual removal of vegetation using hand tools, power tools and
  • prescribed burning.

  • You will perform beach monitoring for nesting sea turtles, record biological information, and tag individual turtles.
  • You will participate in surveying, monitoring and management activities for populations of plant and animal species.
  • You will participate in the prescribed burning of threatened and endangered species habitat.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Exposure to wild animals requires the incumbent to receive pre-exposure vaccination for rabies, to be provided by the government.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to obtain Basic Wildland Fire certification, Firefighter Type 2 (National Wildfire Coordination Group) within six months of appointment or provide proof of current certification.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Qualifications

    Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-03 or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following : Assisting in the conservation and management of wildlife resources on land.

    Examples of qualifying specialized experience include :

  • Research activity or control program work.
  • Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment.
  • Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.
  • Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his / her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.

    Education

    In lieu of the specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience :

    Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled.
