Duties
Weeds, fertilizers, lays sod, waters, cuts, edges, prunes, trims and aerates all grass, ground cover, flowers, shrubs, hedges and trees for a neat appearance. Prepares proper mixture of such materials as sand, humus, topsoil and fertilizer. Prepares seedbeds, mulches and transplants according to seasonal demands. Applies chemicals to grounds, flowers, shrubs and trees according to direction. May also spray or dust with these chemicals according to instructions. Stores chemicals safely. Looks for obvious plant diseases, molds, brown spots, rusts, blight, plant insects, leaf mites, scale borers, slugs, etc. on all indoor and outdoor flowers, shrubs, hedges, trees and lawns. Places seeds or plants in soil at proper depth, taking care not to damage roots while planting or transplanting. May reproduce plants through cuttings, rootings or grafting. Connects hose and sprinkler system at designated points on grounds to irrigate lawns, flowerbeds and landscaping. Gathers, removes and disposes of all litter and debris, such as grass cuttings and leaves from assigned areas such as sidewalks, curbs and lots. Remove grass and weeds from cracks in pavement. Rotates indoor plants according to season or lighting requirements, avoiding unusual or poor plant growth.
Operates a variety of hand and power operated garden tools and equipment such as seeders, spreaders, edger¿s, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, sprayers, lawn mowers and tractors. Utilizes hand-operated snow blowers, truck driven snowplows and ice chippers for snow/ice removal from sidewalks, steps, entrances and parking areas. Removes snow and ice by scraping, chipping, and/or spreading chemicals and/or sand. Spreads sand/chemicals by hand with shovels from a truck as needed. Maintains all assigned operating equipment in a clean and operating condition. Inventories equipment.
This position is emergency essential. May be required to work when the rest of the Base is closed or arrive on duty early and/or stay on duty after normal working hours to initiate maintenance repairs, remove snow, ice, etc.
Operates electric or gasoline driven vehicles up to one and a half ton trucks as required. May be required to drive five-ton truck, and drive and operate a dump truck, a forklift, and a front-end loader. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on all assigned equipment and maintains equipment in a clean and operating condition. Abides by proper safeguarding procedures to prevent loss of assigned supplies and equipment. Keeps work area safe and clean.
Provides trash pick up for all MCCS activities. Repairs outside fences, sign posts, sidewalks, steps and curbs as necessary to upgrade and maintain appearance of outside assigned areas. Installs and removes fencing as required. Sets up and takes down tents and barbeque equipment in areas for special events.
Adheres/observes all vehicle, safety, fire and security regulations and standards. Uses required safety equipment and observe safe work procedures. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.
Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Acknowledges customers, smiles and makes eye contact. Asks questions to determine, verify and solve problems. Checks for satisfaction on the quality of goods and services. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.
Performs other related duties as assigned/required. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.
Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduate preferred with one year experience in a related field.
Must be able to read and write. Must be able to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to complete a work assignment sheet. Must know how to accomplish seasonal gardening tasks. Experience with hand and power operated gardening tools is required. Must have knowledge and ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to tools. Must be able to use a variety of tools to accomplish maintenance work such as tape measure, hammer, screwdriver, etc. Must be able to operate tractors, riding lawn mowers and utilize a variety of lawn equipment. Must possess a valid Virginia state driver¿s license and be capable of obtaining a government vehicle operator¿s license.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the qualifications above.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, carrying and crawling. Lifting up to 45 pounds and climbing ladders to prune or trim vegetation is required. In inclement weather the work can be strenuous and continuous.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is done outdoors and indoors. In working outdoors, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun or cold and being exposed to dirt, dust, mud and sometimes to chemical sprays/dusts. Protective clothing such as eye shields, respirators or safety shoes must be worn as required. There is a chance of minor injuries such as bruises, cuts and scrapes. Safety procedures and regulations must be of the foremost concern and carefully followed.
