POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct and indirect supervision, the surgical assistant will assist the Surgeon, throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative duties and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Standing 80%.
- Sitting 20%.
- Moderate noise levels from medical setting and other lab equipment.
- Medical, office, surgical suites and lab setting.
- Minimum moving requirements of 75 pounds in order to transfer equipment, move and lift surgical patients, and pack and unpack supplies.
- Frequent bending, twisting, and position changes in order to examine and service young patients.
- Exceptional hand eye coordination and control in order to use medical instruments for exams, to provide medical assistance, and the taking and recording of vital signs, preparing and/or placing medical supplies, medical tools, and/or applying medical products to patients.
- Frequent client and interoffice personnel interaction as this position is a service provider to the Physician and all patients including pediatric patients and heavily dependent on excellent customer interaction.
- Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) as required for applying medical first aid, obtaining and recording vitals, preparing and placing medical tools and supplies in preparation for patient care.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Escort patients to patient rooms and answer any general questions or forward patient/parent/guardian questions or concerns to Surgeon when necessary.
- Ensure chart is complete/Informed consent/Medical Records
- Ordering of supplies
- Maintenance of supply stock, implants and equipment
- Repair of small equipment
- Maintenance of the crash cart
- Maintain relationships with third party providers/suppliers
- Taking of radiographs of a variety of types
- Timely prepare treatment area by sterilizing, positioning, and delivering instruments for surgeons’ access.
- Actively provide hand instruments and materials to Surgeon, as needed, during exams and procedures in order to help maintain patient comfort and doctor’s efficiency.
- Assist circulator and anesthesia provider in preparation of the patient for surgery including but not limited to assistance with intravenous catheter placement, tourniquet application, removal of intravenous catheters, cricoid pressure application, and specialty procedures like: bone graft and implant preparation, and other procedures as needed.
- Breakdown surgical field and deliver instruments to reprocessing room/sterile bay.
- Postoperative function includes applying any other specific dressing material such as splints or bandages, assesses skin integrity, assists in transfer of the patient, and follows the patient to recovery if needed or directed by surgeon.
- Maintains/monitors patient’s in recovery
- Using and maintaining hazard control protocols as established by OSHA and office standards.
- Must always represent the practice in a professional, pleasant, and cooperative manner.
- Maintain regular attendance and adhere to assigned work schedule and office policies.
- Must be able to comfortably and efficiently handle multiple deadlines and task assignments.
- Must be able to work both independently and cooperatively in team settings.
- Occasionally there may be some travel, by car or plane, required in order to participate in continuing education or seminars.
- Other duties and tasks, as assigned periodically.
- Minor front desk and administrative duties as needed, answering of phones, booking appointments, collecting payments, entering charges, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
- Always maintain the highest level of confidentiality to HIPAA standards.
- Adhere to strict safety guidelines and procedures to OSHA and office standards.
- Adhere to office policy and procedures when collecting payments.
- Must be comfortable seeing and able to maintain a professional demeanor and attitude while working around blood and smells that may be unpleasant.
- Must be detail oriented in order to work efficiently in small spaces and maintain patient comfort.
- Must be flexible and understand that job duties may change from time to time and that this individual may be asked to assist in other areas of the office or work later than anticipated.
- Must excel in forward thinking in order to anticipate the needs of the doctor as well as the patient.
- Must demonstrate active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Must demonstrate good reading comprehension by understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Must demonstrate excellent communication skills by talking to others to convey Information effectively for both our parents and patients.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
- DAANSE Anesthesia Certification or Qualify to take the examination
- CPR, ACLS(as needed)
- Preferred one year of surgical assisting experience.
- Experience with surgical specialties highly desirable.
