PRN Sterilization Tech & Surgical Assistant Job Description and Duties:
We are looking for a diligent sterilization tech & oral surgery assistant to support our oral surgery assistants before, during, and after each dental procedure. Your responsibilities will include taking X-rays, preparing surgical equipment, and tending to patients. You will also be required to monitor inventory levels and replenish our dental supplies, as needed.
To be successful as a sterilization tech & oral surgery assistant, you should be highly organized, attentive to patients’ needs and have a good understanding of oral surgery procedures.
Sterilization Tech & Oral Surgery Assistant Responsibilities:
- Performing administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, charting, filing, clearance requests and coordinating with other offices.
- Preparing patient charts, recording treatment plans, and updating dental records.
- Adhering to OSHA, HIPAA, ADA and all Washington State Regulations and guidelines.
- Operating X-ray, CBCT, and Intra Oral Scanning devices
- Preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments, materials, and equipment in accordance with infection control and biohazard protocols.
- Assisting the surgeon with all chairside procedures including operatory setup, anesthesia monitoring, and clean up.
- Preparing patients for surgery and monitoring vital signs during procedures.
- Providing patients with information on oral health care, treatment plans, and postoperative outcomes.
- Monitoring our stock of surgical supplies and medication and replenishing as needed.
- Ensuring that instruments and equipment are effectively maintained.
- Providing excellent patient care at all times.
Sterilization Tech & Oral Surgery Assistant Qualifications/Skills:
- Sound knowledge of how to use surgical equipment, instruments, and materials.
- A good understanding of surgical techniques, chairside responsibilities, and health and safety protocols.
- An excellent understanding of dental records, charts, and documentation.
- Great organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
- Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.
Education, Experience, Licensing & Safety Requirements:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- One year of dental assistant experience (equivalent dental education is acceptable)
- Registered Dental Assistant Certification (Within 30 days of employment)
- BLS Certification
- Hepatitis B Vaccination & Titer
- TB Vaccination & Titer
If hired as a full-time Surgical Assistant, additional certifications required are listed below:
- DAANCE Certification (Within 1st year of employment)
- ACLS Certification (Within 1st year of employment)
- BLS Certification (Required until ACLS Certification is acquired)

Physical Work Conditions:
- Mostly indoors except when discharging a patient.
- 8-10 hours a day of standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and using stairs.
- Assisting patients after sedation includes being able to lift and push patients in a wheelchair.
- Wear PPE including gloves, masks, face shields & protective glasses.
- Wear PAPR during surgery.
- Wear black scrubs and athletic shoes.
- Can be exposed to diseases and infections carried by patients.
- Can be exposed to contaminants and biohazard materials.
- Work physically close to patients, usually within inches.
- Exposed to loud or distracting sounds and noise levels.
Hours/Travel
- Works 4-5 days a week (Monday-Friday)
- Works 15-40 hours a week depending on the schedule.
- There will be opportunities to travel and help other offices locally and across the US.
