Summary

The U.S. Sentencing Commission is seeking Document Analysts for the Office of Research and Data. The incumbents' daily activities will focus on analyzing electronic sentencing documents, extracting sentencing data, and accurately entering the information into an electronic database according to established criteria.

Duties

DUTIES

The incumbent's daily activity will focus on analyzing electronic sentencing documents, extracting sentencing data, and accurately entering the information into an electronic database according to established criteria. Duties include :

  • Learning federal sentencing guideline application according to established procedures.
  • Ensuring sentencing documents are received in a format that is approved and required by the Commission.
  • Identifying and screening out non-guidelines cases mistakenly forwarded by the courts.
  • Timely and accurately analyzing re-sentencing documents, and correctly entering updated sentencing information into an electronic database.
  • Timely and accurately analyzing and processing documents relating to original sentences according to established procedures; identifying, interpreting, and extracting sentencing information and accurately entering data into an electronic database.
  • Attempting to resolve database error messages before cases are completed; properly documenting issues, noting processing difficulties and identifying cases that need follow-up or resolution.
  • Coordinating workflow with the Document Analyst Manager to ensure organizational needs are met in a timely fashion.
  • Complying with established office procedures, maintaining confidentiality and protecting the privacy and security of all federal sentencing documents and confidential court documents received.
  • Completing special projects as directed by the Document Analyst Manager.

    MANDATORY QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level which is in or directly related to the line of work of this position, or experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Applicants must have excellent analytical and organizational skills.

    Applicants must have demonstrated work experience related to the mandatory requirements listed below and must address the qualification requirements in an attached cover letter.

  • Knowledge of the types of sentencing documents used in federal criminal cases, the federal sentencing guidelines, and the federal criminal justice system.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments, focus on details, and produce precise work products in a timely manner to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated data processing experience and knowledge of data quality assurance procedures.
  • Ability to analyze federal sentencing documents, identify sentencing variables and interpret sentencing information with respect to the way the federal sentencing guidelines were applied in a particular case.
  • Ability to interact successfully with staff at all levels and work effectively as a team member.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following areas of experience :

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited university or college in criminology, sociology, or a related empirical social science.
  • BENEFITS

    The Commission offers a monthly transit subsidy to employees who use mass transit to commute to and from work, subject to the availability of funds. The Commission offers alternative work schedules (AWS), which are fixed work schedules that enable full-time employees to complete the basic 80-hour biweekly work requirement in less than 10 workdays.

    The Commission offers regular telework (not full-time) to employees in positions deemed eligible by the staff director and who meet the requirements of an approved telework arrangement in which an employee performs official duties at home or at an approved telework site. This position is eligible to regularly telework up to four days per week.

    The Commission also offers training opportunities to employees through LinkedIn Learning, and the Judiciary's Online University, which offers academic credit and professional credit programs through web-based learning. These training tools assist Commission employees with taking online courses in a flexible way, by offering training courses in the areas of : staff training and development; credit toward undergraduate degree programs; continuing education and non-credit certificate programs; executive education; contract training; credit credentials courses for continuing professional education and credit for individuals who hold credentials and achieve certifications associated with several globally-recognized sponsored organizations.

    The Commission is conveniently located next to Union Station on Capitol Hill, and is easily accessible by public transportation, including the Metro, and the MARC and VRE commuter trains. In addition to the federal benefits package, the Commission's location in the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building offers various amenities such as a health unit, credit union, day care center, food services, and free on-site fitness center.
