Position Summary:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Family Community Medicine Chair Office, is seeking a Research Scientist Specialist. The Research Scientist Specialist position will join the Department of Family and Community Medicine within the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine. This individual will work directly under the supervision of Dr. Irfan Asif who is Chair of the Department and Associate Dean for Primary Care and Rural Health. They will be chiefly responsible for growing our research portfolio in family medicine for vulnerable (e.g. rural) communities, as well as our sports and exercise medicine research efforts.
This position will also support and evaluate medical education programming within the department, and primary care aspects in the Heersink School of Medicine. Additionally, this position will provide guidance to medical trainees for their scientific projects and grant applications. General Responsibilities To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures in a particular field of specialization. To plan, design, and conduct research and present findings.
A Research Scientist Specialist delves deeper into niche areas within their field, leading complex research initiatives and developing innovative methodologies. This role demands a higher level of expertise and independent judgment in experimental design and problem-solving. Specialists often mentor junior scientists, contributing significantly to strategic research directions and publishing influential findings. Depending on the research focus, this position may involve research participant contact, research animal contact, and/or specimens.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Write publications, presentations, and grants.
- Responsible for independent work on the design, conduct, and reporting of research.
- Ability to supervise a large research team.
- Monitors outcomes, develops and implements modifications, and analyzes reports.
- Designs, interprets, and writes grant proposals and publications.
- Supervises and oversees the maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Directs and teaches others on research practices both face-to-face and through virtual means.
- Possesses extensive knowledge in a specialized field of study.
- Assists with the identification of research problems and project outcomes, while also developing of research methodologies, database management, and procedures for primary care projects, research, and scholarly work.
- Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities.
- Assists in manuscript development, writing, and revising of research and outcomes.
- Supports researchers in developing manuscripts, abstracts, and grants for primary care.
- Provides methodological support to ongoing and future prospective studies this may include the development of study protocols and manual of operations to facilitate multisite work.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Range: $ 81,525 - $120,000
Doctorate degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience OR Master's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferred:
- Experience in a clinical healthcare setting and performing human subjects' research in a clinical setting.
- Demonstrated interest and expertise in medical education and sports medicine.
- Proficiency in study design, grant writing, and conducting reviews (e.g., systematic, scoping) and meta-analyses.
- Terminal degree 4 years experience
