Safety Officer - Environmental Health & Safety

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.

Description

Responsible for the fire, life safety and occupational health and safety programs to prevent loss of life and injury to faculty, staff, patients, visitors and students and to protect UAB property. To be responsible for construction plans review, fire and life safety inspections and documentation, emergency response and communication with local fire and rescue. Responsibilities also include compliance with EH&S standards and with federal, state and local regulatory requirements as well as regulatory interpretation and technical advice.

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Implements an on-site inspection program of UAB buildings and facilities required to ensure that they are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations related to the health and safety of faculty, staff, patients, visitors and students.

Investigates incidents, injuries, property damage and complaints concerning hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place.

Develops, implements and maintains programs, systems and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of faculty, staff, patients, visitors and students.

Ensures that all regulations are observed in accordance with NFPA, OSHA, JCAHO, and other federal, state and local agencies. Assists in the development of internal and external emergency disaster plans.

Acts as the liaison for the University with multiple agencies such as local fire and rescue on matters concerning life safety and fire prevention and construction design review issues.

Implements fire inspection programs that identify fire safety deficiencies that could result in injury, property damage, fire or explosion and assures that appropriate documentation is provided.

Conducts safety education orientation and continuing education safety training including but not limited to medical waste management, hazardous material decontamination, emergency preparedness and fire safety.

Coordinates the fire drill program; maintains all documentation and directs corrective actions as necessary. Conducts a written annual evaluation of the program.

Provides assistance in environmental sampling, including sampling for chemical exposure, air quality, noise and dust.

Complies with all mandatory annual requirements (TB skin test, Corporate Compliance, etc.). Responds to emergencies in assigned areas as necessary, including after hours, weekends, and holidays.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Independent Judgement/Problem Solving:

Carries out duties within the scope of University policies and procedures. Analyzes problems, adapts guidelines, and exercises independent judgment within accepted practices. Makes recommendations that impact policies, procedures, and practices, referring exceptions to the supervisor.

Customer Service Relationships:

Predicts customer needs and motivates others to provide excellent service. Handles sensitive issues and ensures problem resolution. Sets customer service standards and establishes feedback systems for improvement. Holds themselves accountable for service excellence.

STARTING ANNUAL RATE OF PAY: $60,835.00 - $85,287.00 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)


QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver's license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Preferred:

A combination of one or more certifications: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biosafety Safety Officer (CBSP), Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Ability to identify hazards, inspect facilities and equipment, and review documentation

Understanding of environmental health and safety principles and applications, with demonstrated ability to direct and conduct effective quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments.

Broad knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, consensus standards, and current developments related to EH&S.

Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities

Excellent communication skills with an ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences including faculty, students, staff, and representatives of regulatory agencies

Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

Able to calmly and professionally react to and resolve issues quickly and effectively.

Able to analyze processes, equipment, and work environments to identify potential hazard.

Able to professionally interact with external regulatory agencies.

PERSONAL: Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities that require performing tasks requiring wearing respirator, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus, frequent traveling, prolonged standing, climbing stairs, and sitting at computer for long periods of time.
