The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Systems Pharmacology AI Research Center (SPARC), is seeking a Scientist III. We invite qualified candidates to apply for a leading Academic Scientist position in our state-of-the-art AI in Medicine lab. The role is specifically designed for an individual with an extensive post-doctoral background (10 years) in chemistry, pharmacology, entrepreneurship, and drug discovery. The selected candidate will be central to advancing and guiding multidisciplinary research in AI/ML-enabled drug discovery, pharmacology, genomics, structural genomics, molecular dynamics, docking simulations, and chemical screenings.
General Responsibilities
- To interpret, organize, execute and coordinate research assignments.
- To formulate and conduct research on problems of considerable scope and complexity.
- To explore subject area and define scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead Innovative Drug-Discovery Research.
- Drive groundbreaking projects in AI-enabled drug discovery from conceptualization to implementation. Develop and oversee research protocols, data collection, and milestone achievements. Execute advanced statistical and machine learning analyses on collected research data. Interpret the results and lead the writing and submission of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, ensuring effective communication of research findings.
- Write and Secure Research Grants and Other External Research Funding to Expand Operations.
- Identify various grant and external funding opportunities, lead the writing and submission of applications, and secure funding to expand the lab's research capabilities and operations. Manage and report on the usage of funds to ensure effective allocation.
- Translate Research into Commercial Ventures.
- Engage in technology transfer activities to transition research findings into commercial applications. Liaise with stakeholders and consult on startup ventures related to AI in drug discovery.
- Mentor and Train Research Staff.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate research assistants and interns in the lab. Conduct hands-on training sessions in relevant computational methodologies and techniques. Evaluate performance and offer constructive feedback to enhance research skills.
- Manage Lab Operations and Resources.
- Oversee the day-to-day lab activities, ensuring efficient operations. Manage lab resources, including equipment and budgets, to support ongoing research projects and expansions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Annual Salary Range: $80,300 - $133,300
Doctor of Philosophy, D.V.M. or M.D. degree in a related field and six (6) years of related experience OR M.D. and Master's degree and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. In certain rare circumstances, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may be considered.
Preferences
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Informatics, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Biophysics, Statistics, or related field.
- AI/ML Expertise: A deep understanding of machine learning algorithms, neural networks, and their application in drug discovery is highly preferred.
- Computational Chemistry: Proficiency in molecular dynamics simulations, quantum chemistry, and docking simulations.
- Programming Languages: Proficiency in Python, R, or other languages commonly used in data analysis and machine learning.
- Bioinformatics Tools: Extensive experience with tools and databases for genomics, structural biology, and chemical informatics.
- Statistical Analysis: Strong skills in statistical methods including but not limited to regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and Bayesian inference.
- Data Management: Familiarity with handling large datasets, database management, and data integration techniques.
- Leadership: Ability to lead, guide, and mentor a team of researchers and students.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for publishing research, delivering presentations, and grant writing.
- Collaboration: Ability to work efficiently in a multidisciplinary environment, with the capability to integrate various scientific domains.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical thinking and the ability to approach complex scientific problems creatively.
- Time Management: Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
