What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Ethics Consultant - Clinical Ethics - Days (002) position at UAB Medicine?
The Clinical Ethics Consultant works in tandem with patients, families, and the front-line, multidisciplinary team as the first responder for ethics case consultation and preventative ethics.
Provides both individual and group clinical ethics consultation, working collaboratively with healthcare providers, patients, and surrogate decision-makers on ethical concerns. Provides prompt responsiveness, ensures ongoing communication with individuals involved in the case, and follows through on all of the deliverables of the consults. Assists in the development and delivery of educational activities regarding clinical ethical issues for physicians and staff. Actively involved in Schwartz Rounds and Ethics Case Conferences hosted by the Clinical Ethics program. Serves as an active participant on the Ethics Committee. Routinely reviews and develops institutional ethics policies and procedures consistent with current ethical norms in collaboration with the Ethics Committee as requested. Engages in preventive ethics activities and initiatives as needed. Performs administrative activities related to the Clinical Ethics program as needed; including but not limited to: Accurate and timely reporting of data into the ethics consultation database and oversight of the 24/7 on-call schedule. Performs other duties as assigned.
Master's Degree in a healthcare related field, including but not limited to Ethics, Nursing, Philosophy, Social Work, Theology, etc.. Evidence of coursework in healthcare ethics. Two (2) years of substantive clinical ethics consultation experience preferred. Experience may substitute for education requirement. Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certified (HEC-C) credential required within five (5) years of employment.
