Advanced Practice Provider - UAB Pulmonary Clinic
The following APPs may be considered for this role: Adult Primary Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Work Schedule
Full-time, benefited
Day shift, M-F 8am-5pm
No weekends/holidays/call
CME allowance: Full-time benefited APPs receive an annual $2,000.00 CME allowance. This can be used for recertification, fees, CMEs, etc. that occur after a new employee's start date.
The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant to join the Pulmonary Clinic. The APP would be responsible for the medical care and treatment of patients primarily treated within the UAB Kirklin Clinic location but may also require occasional travel to the UAB Gardendale and UAB Hoover locations. The primary patient population includes patients being assessed for pulmonary disorders as well as management of established pulmonary patients. Clinical duties include providing physical and psychosocial evaluation for patients; interpreting and analyzing patient data to determine patient status, patient management and treatment; providing ongoing evaluation of patients with chronic and acute illness; assisting physicians, nursing staff and ancillary staff to ensure continuity of patient care. The position requires contacting patients regarding results, making changes to medication regimens as needed, managing lab work and documentation, and coordinating care. The APP must be self-directed, self-motivated, possess good communication skills as well as interpersonal skills. Additionally the APP must be able to 1) perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure 2) accept responsibility for the direction, control and planning or one’s own work 3) work independently 4) recognize rights and responsibilities of patient confidentiality 5) convey empathy and compassion to those experiencing pain, physical and/or emotional distress 6) relate to others in a manner which creates a sense of teamwork and cooperation 7) communicate effectively with people from every socioeconomic, cultural and educational background 8) exhibit flexibility and cope effectively in an ever changing, fast paced healthcare environment 9) perform effectively when confronted with emergency, critical or unusual situation 10) demonstrate the quality work ethic of doing the right thing, the right way and 11) maintaining a customer focus and striving to meet the customer’s needs. Prior pulmonary experience is preferred but new graduates are encouraged to apply.

General Responsibilities
To provide medical care and treatment within established scope of practice to medical services patients as assigned by and under the direction of the collaborating physician (Section 610-X-5 of the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code) or under supervision of a Board-Certified Physician (Section 540-X-7 of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners Administrative Code). The collaborating physician shall be available for direct communication for consultation and referral or arrange for the same medical coverage by a physician who is pre-approved by the State Board of Medical Examiners in the same manner as the collaborating physician of record. To coordinate plan of care, discharge and specialty referrals as appropriate to meet the age specific needs of the patient. To plan and coordinate health care education for patients family and other health care providers as needed. To perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments. To interpret, analyze and evaluate patient’s medical record and social data. To perform and/or assist the physician with procedures per collaborative agreement. To coordinate and participate in performance improvement activities.

Minimum Requirements
Master's degree in nursing with an Adult Primary Care NP or Family NP certification, or graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preference: Prior pulmonary experience is preferred but new graduates are encouraged to apply.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
Currently certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner
(CRNP) Specialty by the Alabama Board of Nursing or licensed as a Physician Assistant by the Alabama
Board of Medical Examiners with certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) by the National
Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from
the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Based on thorough physical and psychosocial patient assessments, formulates and implements
of disease. Plans include patient and family education, prescriptions, additional lab and diagnostic testing, and therapies.
- Ensures complete documentation of patient assessments, patient care plans, and care provided.
- Orders and interprets laboratory and other diagnostic tests for the patient.
- Maintains records and reports as required by regulatory agencies and The Joint Commission (TJC). May coordinate and/or participate in performance and quality improvement activities.
- May assist in the coordination of research protocols, serving as a patient advocate and a liaison
- Provides assistance in orientation and/or training of new clinical personnel as needed. Provides
materials for patients and staff.
- Serves as the expert clinical resource to the clinical staff and patients in the area of specialty.
- Provides a safe environment for patients and others.
- Demonstrates a responsible attitude toward continued professional growth.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
