UAB Callahan Emergency Department is the only Level 1 Trauma Eye Center in the Southeast region that provides specialty care for patients experiencing eye emergencies. Our nurses gain a specialty skill in treating eye trauma patients through working with renowned ophthalmology specialists, as well as having the opportunity to treat other emergencies that can involve a patient’s eyesight. Our department has a Baylor nightshift team in place, so working on the weekend is rarely requested. Our nightshift team works 3-12 hours shifts weekly, 6:00 pm – 6:00 am, Monday through Friday (36 hours weekly).

- Must have a current Alabama license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
- Previous Emergency Department experience, and knowledge of clinical ophthalmology and terminology is desirable.
- BLS certification required by end of employee provisional period. ACLS and PALS certification required within one year of employment.
- Provides quality patient care for the needs of the populations served and age specific groups as indicated:
- neonate (0-28 days)
- infant (>28 days – 1 year)
- pediatric (>1 – 12 years)
- adolescent (>12 – 17 years)
- adult (>17 – 65 years)
- geriatric (>65 years)
