As a Staff Software Engineer on the Merchandising Team, you'll be at the intersection of technology, operations, and consumer experience, building the platform that powers in-app merchandising and promotions for millions of users worldwide. This role connects the knowledge and expertise of Uber's global and local operations teams with Uber's vast consumer base, ensuring that every shopping experience is not only seamless but also locally relevant and engaging.
Our mission is to enable scaled human curation-leveraging powerful tools, automation, and consumer-facing UX to deliver an editorialized, localized, and culturally relevant shopping experience. Whether it's surfacing seasonal must-haves, ensuring regulatory-compliant promotions, or tailoring offers to local preferences, we bridge the gap between merchants and consumers, helping both thrive.
What the Candidate Will Do:
1. Work closely with Product, Design, Machine Learning, and Data Science teams to craft compelling ad experiences.
2. Influence long-term technical roadmap, architecture decisions, and engineering best practices for the Consumer Experience Org.
3. Provide technical leadership, mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
4. Collaborate with engineers, Product Managers, and Designers to execute on the roadmap.
5. Enhance engineering quality, monitoring, and on-call practices while driving best practices.
6. Lead and contribute to wider organizational efforts across Delivery and Uber.
7. Identify opportunities for efficiency and value creation, teaching others to do the same.
Basic Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's or Master's degreein Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
2. Minimum 10 years of software engineering experience, with expertise in scaling products from inception to millions of users globally.
3. Experience acting as a technical role model and force multiplier, leading peer engineers, providing hands-on coaching and mentorship.
4. Strong proficiency inJava, Scala, Python, or Golangfor backend development.
5. Expertise indistributed systems and micro-services architecture.
Preferred Qualifications:
01. Track record ofleading technical initiatives and mentoring engineersin high-growth environments.
02. Experience inthe merchandising field.
03. Hands-on experience inA/B testing and experimentation platforms.
04. Experience working withstreaming frameworks like Kafka, Flink, or Spark for real-time data processing.
05. Experience withSQL, NoSQL databases, caching, and large-scale storage solutions.
06. Excellentproblem-solving, system design, and leadership skills.
07. Resilience, determination, ownership mindset, and a keen appetite for collaborative efforts.
08. Experience owning the long-term technical vision and strategy for a team.
09. Experience working at large companies (10k )

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$223,000 per year - USD$248,000 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$223,000 per year - USD$248,000 per year.
