Title: Medical Coder
Department: Surgery
Reports to: Billing Manager
Pay Range : $22-$26 hourly
Position Summary: Under the direction of the billing supervisor, a coder reviews, analyzes and codes diagnostic, procedural and/or surgical information that determines Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance payments.
Essential Functions:
⮚ Provide accurate coding for charges submitted by providers from a variety of encounter forms or operative reports using ICD10 CM, CPT and HCPCS codes
⮚ Review and submit appeals to insurance carriers for any coding denials
⮚ Charge entry for charges generated from all sites in the CGM system for billing
⮚ Answer patient and insurance telephone inquiries as needed
⮚ Verify and submit charges from EMR
⮚ Assure the final diagnoses and operative procedures as stated by the physician are valid and complete
⮚ Abstract all necessary information and assign codes which most accurately describe each documented diagnosis, surgical procedure according to established guidelines
⮚ Evaluate the record for documentation consistency and accuracy
⮚ Analyze provider documentation to assure the appropriate E and M levels are assigned using the correct codes
⮚ Gives feedback to attending surgeons regarding procedural documentation as well as assisting with billing/coding education and training for residents of the Dept. of Surgery
Other Functions:
⮚ Participate in meetings and on committees/task forces, as needed
⮚ Demonstrate the ability to meet changing conditions
⮚ Other duties as required by the UBMD management team
Minimum Job Requirements:
Education: H.S. diploma or equivalent required. CCS, CCS-P or CPC certification required Associate’s degree preferred.
Experience/Qualifications: Minimum of 2 years of coding experience using ICD-10 or equivalent required. Staff member is expected to enroll in continuing education courses to maintain certification.
