The purpose of this position is to assist the providers and with understanding the medications a patient takes prior to presenting to the hospital and to improve the continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient. The Pharmacy Technician 3 will work with pharmacies to assure coverage of high-risk medications, assist with medication reconciliation and assist the pharmacists with calls to the patient to ensure the proper usage of medications and education. Responsible for other duties related to the transition of care as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • One year of inpatient hospital pharmacy experience
  • Working knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law
  • Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise
  • Ability to operate Pharmacy Information System and other computer programs
  • Thorough understanding of drug categories, metric system and medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of generic and brand names of drugs and understand the use restrictions that apply.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English.
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
  • Ability to assess a typical work situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action. Recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to pharmacist for resolution
  • Ability to interpret physician orders within scope of practice
  • Knowledge of computer data base maintenance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of Department, UC Policy and Procedures and Patient Care Standards pertinent to pharmacy practice
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem; identify the resources available to help solve the problem; create and implement viable solutions; and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
  • Ability to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution
  • Ability to impart knowledge and develop the skills of students participating in training programs, as well as new hires and staff seeking additional opportunities
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English

    The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

    The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
