DFCM is recruiting an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Clinical to join the actively evolving Palliative Medicine program within the UC Health system to provide clinical services at both University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC) and West Chester Hospital (WCH). They will provide palliative care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and further the COM mission through opportunities to participate in education, innovation, and scholarship in the field of palliative medicine. Rank is commensurate with experience.

The role will require provision of both inpatient and outpatient palliative care at both UCMC and WCH, and to serve as an active educator and faculty member in the Hospital & Palliative Medicine (HPM) Fellowship at WCH.

Essential Functions

Clinical Care:

  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary palliative medicine team to provide palliative medicine services for patients at UCMC and WCH.
  • Share on-call responsibilities including overnight and weekends.
  • Participate in UC Health Palliative Medicine service building and expansion initiatives.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the clinical sites.
  • Attend Palliative Medicine team meetings.
  • Serve on hospital committees as needed.
  • Collaborate with and participate in shared/split visits as indicated with Advanced Practice Providers while concurrently on clinical service.

Teaching

  • Supervise, teach, and provide feedback for Internal Medicine Residents on the UCMC Palliative Medicine elective, HPM Fellows at WCH, Family Medicine residents at WCH on the palliative medicine elective, and 4th year Medical Students on the WCH Palliative Medicine elective.
  • Contribute to a positive learning environment for learners.
  • Give lectures as part of the palliative medicine education series.
  • Provide education and serve as a resource for all healthcare workers in areas of clinical expertise.

Scholarship, Innovation And Leadership

  • On average, each core faculty member is anticipated to complete two scholarly activities per year.
  • All care faculty are expected to contribute to scholarship, including any of the following: curriculum development; performance improvement; research; regional and national presentations; publications; and peer review.
  • Leadership opportunities available based on experience and career goals.

Minimum Requirements

  • Medical degree (MD or DO).
  • Unrestricted Ohio Medical License and DEA license.
  • Board Certification or Eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine or a minimum of 10 years experience providing palliative medicine services in the hospital setting.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Skills to provide palliative care for a varied population of adults including but not limited to:

  • Ability to lead family meetings, goals of care discussions, and end-of-life discussions with humility.
  • Completion of psychosocial and spiritual assessments in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Management of pain and non-pain symptoms that accompany life-limiting illness.
  • Providing end-of-life care.
  • Understanding of hospice eligibility criteria and the ability to appropriately refer patients.

Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team and provide consultative care accomplished through:

  • Providing a supportive team environment through expressed enthusiasm, approachability, and respect for all members of the healthcare team.
  • Encouraging all team members to participate in the development of treatment plans.
  • Respecting differing opinions.
  • Openly accepting feedback from all colleagues.
  • Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary team, experience precepting learners on palliative medicine topics, and prior scholarship in palliative medicine is ideal.
