DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a skilled Development Technician 3 (Aerial Sensor Operator).

Under supervision, the aerial sensor operator perform fabrication, assembly and maintenance of scientific equipment. At this level, incumbents may assist in equipment design by suggesting changes or alternatives to higher level technical personnel.

The aerial sensor operator shall acquire lidar and photogrammetry remote sensing data in the field related to oceanography, coastlines and estuaries, and hydrologically impacted areas of interest. Aerial surveys will be accompanied by manual ground surveys of terrestrial sites. The incumbent will maintain and operate a complex system of sensors, and document their operation for repeated use and troubleshooting in the field. Additional responsibilities include the shipping and installation logistics of equipment in remote locations on different airborne platforms; data backup and management; assistance in data processing; generation of field report records, technical documentation, and equipment manuals for all logistical aspects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school and three (3) years of technical and craft experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

General knowledge of lidar & photogrammetry.

Experience with electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical assembly procedures.

Experience with fabricating and machining techniques, and the ability to read and understand mechanical drawings.

Prior experience with electronic test equipment including the digital multi-meter and soldering station, and the ability to read and understand schematics.

Prior experience in operating general test equipment including scales, hydraulic systems, and various measurement devices.

Organizational skills to maintain laboratory space, tools, supplies, and equipment.

Experience with laboratory, shop, and field safety procedures.

Experience with purchasing procedures and ability to procure tools, materials, components, and supplies in a cost effective and timely manner.

Experience with shipping logistics to domestic and international destinations including import / export restrictions.

Computer proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, internet, Google drive, and familiarity with Windows-based software.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a variety of diverse individuals, including scientists, engineers, vendors, lab, and support personnel.

Ability to set priorities and effectively manage and organize multiple tasks with competing demands.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Access to reliable transportation or ability to obtain and maintain a California driver's license to operate a University vehicle.

Must be willing and able to travel.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $56,814 - $68,215 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $27.21 - $32.67
