DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pathology at UC San Diego aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UC San Diego.

Under supervision, the incumbent will assist in maintaining a laboratory animal colony and conducting in vivo and cell culture experiments. This role involves managing breeding records, weaning animals, collecting and processing tissues, and maintaining cell cultures. The position also includes general laboratory maintenance tasks such as preparing stock solutions, managing biohazard waste, and coordinating with the Lab Manager to ensure the lab operates efficiently. The associate will work collaboratively with the research team, adhering to institutional protocols and maintaining accurate records of their work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Theoretical knowledge of animal biology, genetics, and molecular biology typically acquired through a Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field, and / or relevant lab experience.

Demonstrated experience in animal colony management, including breeding, weaning, and record-keeping according to established protocols.

Ability to handle and restrain laboratory animals, including performing ear tagging, tail snips, and euthanasia following IACUC protocols.

Practical knowledge of sterile cell culture techniques, including the preparation of primary cultures and maintenance of immortalized cell lines.

Experience in basic in vivo techniques such as IP, IV, and SC injections, and sample collection from animal models.

Demonstrated ability to follow written and verbal protocols and accurately document procedures.

Willingness to learn new techniques and approaches, and adapt to evolving laboratory needs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and EH&S guidelines.

Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and laboratory-specific software for data entry and record-keeping.

Ability to maintain laboratory stocks, prepare reagents, and perform general lab maintenance tasks.

Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
