Position description

The Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) Division within the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body, and invites applications from qualified individuals in an open search for a Project Scientist.

The IGPP Division of SIO seeks to hire one or more Project Scientists in the following areas :

  • Atmospheric remote sensing using radio occultation
  • Numerical weather modeling and data assimilation
  • Optical fiber sensors for geophysical applications

The candidate is responsible for effectively working within a research team at IGPP and collaborating with colleagues outside UCSD while demonstrating the capacity to work autonomously. The candidate's responsibility may involve theoretical and numerical model development, experimental data analysis, fieldwork experiments, and guiding students and postdocs within the group. At UC San Diego, Project Scientists are academic researchers and are expected to demonstrate significant and creative contributions to a research program or project and demonstrate professional competence and activity. Project scientists will publish and carry out research under the supervision of a Professor or a member of the Professional Research Series. They may serve as Co-Investigators, but are not required to do so, nor are they required to carry out fully independent research or develop an independent research reputation.

We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated excellence in research and service and are committed to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. A competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to contribute to the success of externally funded research programs consistent with the appointment level, is required. Candidates will be considered at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist levels.

All positions are subject to funding availability. Positions in areas other than those listed above may become available at a later date.

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled based on the ongoing needs of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics.
