Primary responsibilities include patrolling campus property by motor vehicle and on foot, providing protection of life and property, keeping the peace, and conducting investigations of reported crimes, accidents or other related incidents. Officers are responsible for submitting reports, enforcing traffic and parking laws and regulations, making arrests, testifying in court, and responding to medical emergencies and illness calls.

Must have an active POST Certificate of graduation or Recertification from a POST Certified academy or an active Peace Officer POST certificate upon hire.

Must be available to work rotating shifts, overtime, details / Mutual Aid (both in and out of San Diego County), as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Proven knowledge of State and Federal laws, rules and regulations as applicable to the police function. Knowledge of and experience enforcing rules and regulations, guidelines, security policies and procedures. Knowledge of University of California laws and rules preferred.

Ability and experience serving and working well with the public as a solo officer as well as an effective member of a team. Ability to comply with instructions and counsel from supervisors.

Ability to maintain a professional stance in all stressful situations and, when necessary, taking charge, managing incident scenes, and coordinating efforts with others outside the department.

Proven skill and knowledge in the use and care of all firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, restraint devices, ECDs and other safety equipment issued by the Police Department.

Competent in defensive tactics and arrest and control techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to follow proper officer safety tactics and procedures.

Demonstrated ability in the application of first aid and emergency medical "first responder" skills.

Thoroughly understands and can follow proper evidence collection, preservation and impound procedures. Proven ability to prepare criminal cases for prosecution and to effectively testify in court.

Demonstrated skills in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other police-related driving conditions.

Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar, punctuation and spelling, as well as the cohesive organization of facts and information.

Strong ability and experience in using computers, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and law enforcement databases. Experience using CAD / RMS systems is preferred.

Must possess interest in public service and understands the importance of stressing spirit of the law and not just enforcing the letter of the law.

Demonstrated ability and experience in teaching, coaching and guiding others.

Experience communicating in various forums : one-on-one, in groups, in stressful situations, in writing. Ability to communicate using a police radio while keeping transmissions brief and clear.

Strong sound judgment. Ability to process information quickly and thoroughly, while making effective and ethical decisions that are trustworthy and are in keeping with the highest standards of conduct.

Proven appropriate maturity and poise when dealing with supervisors, management, co-workers and the community. Ability to react, cope and reason according to established standards and practices.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

High School graduate or equivalent.

Minimum age of 21 years; weight in proportion to height; vision 20 / 100 correctable to 20 / 30 with normal color perception.

Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License.

Must have an active POST Certificate of graduation or Recertification from a POST Certified academy or an active Peace Officer POST certificate upon hire.

Candidates will be fingerprinted and have background thoroughly investigated.

Must be able to pass medical, drug, psychiatric or sociological exams, and a polygraph exam.

Must be able to work rotating shifts and mandatory overtime, when needed, regardless of assigned shift and in diverse weather conditions.

Must meet CANRA compliance requirement per "California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4)".

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $96,883 - $121,835 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $46.40 - $58.35

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
