DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Qualcomm Institute / Calit2 is one of four institutes launched in December 2000 through the California Institutes for Science and Innovation. It is a 'think tank' in inventing the collaborative research environment for the digital future. As the UCSD Division of Calit2, the Qualcomm Institute's mission is to harness information technologies and telecommunications to improve the competitiveness of the California economy and to benefit society. Multidisciplinary teams composed of faculty, researchers, staff and students in the sciences, engineering and the arts conduct projects that involve a variety of advanced visualization venues and technologies to display, analyze and communicate information.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of Dr. Yang Cai, the Research Engineer will work on Augmented Reality software development, 3D modeling and animation, embedded system programming, system simulation and design, programming in Java, C , Swift, Unreal, and / or other related languages. Assist with grant applications and technical manuals through composing and editing text and figures. Analyze research data and participate in writing research papers for publication, as needed. Other duties within scope of description.
Uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering or a related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Experience with embedded software development, particularly ESP32-S3 microcontroller.
Knowledge of game development, including real-time movement and animation
Ability to read technical documentation and debug hardware-related issues.
Demonstrated proficiency in C , Java, Python, and C
Experience assembling and connecting electrical components by hand, and creating pinmaps as documentation.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
Experience using Arduino IDE and similar VSCode extensions.
Experience in assembling and testing software on real hardware
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.
