The focus of the Apprentice position will be to learn how to prepare detailed drawings of architectural and structural features of buildings or drawings and topographical relief maps used in civil engineering or mechanical engineering projects, in the Utilities market. The individual will use knowledge of building materials, engineering practices, and mathematics to complete drawings.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated technical and design capabilities and the desire to complete an Apprenticeship Program over a three-year period. The starting pay for this position is $20 per hour with annual incremental increases as the individual completes steps in the three-year program. High School degree or GED and acceptance into the College of Lake Country Education Program is required.
Primary Duties and Training Program:
The Apprentice will:

Create graphical representations of civil structures and mechanical systems.
- Produce drawings, using computer-assisted drafting systems (CAD) or drafting machines, or by hand, using compasses, dividers, protractors, triangles, and other drafting devices.
- Draft plans and detailed drawings for structures, installations, and construction projects, such as highways, sewage disposal systems, and dikes, working from sketches or notes.
- Finish and duplicate drawings and documentation packages according to required mediums and specifications for reproduction, using blueprinting, photography, or other duplicating methods.

Evaluate technical data to determine effect on designs or plans by
- Analyze building codes, by-laws, space and site requirements, and other technical documents and reports to determine their effect on architectural designs.

Prepare detailed work plans.
- Determine the order of work and method of presentation, such as orthographic or isometric drawing.

Verify Mathematical calculations
- Check dimensions of materials to be used and assign numbers to lists of materials.

Collect data about project sites
- Obtain and assemble data to complete architectural designs, visiting job sites to compile measurements as necessary.

Explain engineering drawing, specifications, or other technical information.
- Explain drawings to production or construction teams and provide adjustments as necessary.

Estimate operational costs.
- Prepare cost estimates, contracts, bidding documents, and technical reports for specific projects under an architect's or engineer's supervision.

Review details of technical drawings or specifications.
- Review rough sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data to ensure that they conform to design concepts.
- Be enrolled in the College of Lake County junior college curriculum in coordination with this Apprenticeship and attend courses during paid work hours.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High School degree or GED and acceptance into the College of Lake Country Education Program

Essential Physical Abilities:
- Ability to sit or stand at a desk using a computer 80% of the time.
- Ability to accommodate varying work schedules.
- Ability to climb up and down stairs and ladders.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to utilize full manual dexterity (i.e. sitting, squatting, bending, kneeling, lifting, walking, manipulating tools with limbs extended).

Compensation and Benefits
Base Pay Range: $20 per hour which annualizes to $41,600 for a 40-hour week. Overtime is paid at 1 times the hourly rate for all hours worked over 40 in a week.
