Duties:
Responsible for developing and implementing laboratory safety and health programs within the Occupational Health and Safety department; maintain cognizance of technical developments in chemical hygiene and laboratory safety best practices; conduct laboratory exposure assessments and chemical exposure monitoring; conduct experiment safety reviews and chemical risk analyses, including What-If, Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA), Hazards & Operability Analysis (HazOp), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Fault Tree Analysis; maintain cognizance of codes and industry best practice standards that apply to large-scale chemical processes in research, including NFPA, ASME, and EIC; analyze chemical reactivity and process condition hazards associated with pilot and pre-pilot plant scale research projects; review process documents such as batch cards, operating procedures, PFDs, and P&IDs, heat and mass balances, and improve upon pre-existing versions while accounting for non-steady-state operation, such as relief cases, upset and start-up/shut-down conditions; utilize chemical process risk assessments, laboratory ventilation, reactive chemistry, industrial hygiene, exposure monitoring, toxicology, process flow diagrams, and process and instrumentation diagrams to perform duties; advise on process control and monitoring technologies, including safety system reliability, PLC programming, over temperature protection, over pressure protection, fail safe considerations, gas detection, and interlocks; assess appropriate selection and use of ventilated enclosures and chemical personal protective equipment; serve as responsible individual for one or more laboratory safety programs, such as pilot plant and pre-pilot plant scale research projects, glovebox integrity, laboratory ventilation, nanomaterial safety, and chemical hygiene; and develop and conduct On-The-Job, classroom, and computer-based training programs in the area of research safety.

Salary: This position is budgeted to pay $110,040 per year (standard benefits apply);
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Hygiene, or in a related field of study (will accept equivalent foreign degree);
Experience: Two (2) years in the position above, as an Environment, Safety, and Health Coordinator, as a Laboratory Chemist, as a Quality Control Chemist, as a Quality Control Technician, as a Research Assistant, as a Worker Safety and Health Intern, or in a related occupation;
Other Requirements: Experience must include six (6) months’ use of all the following: chemical process risk assessments, laboratory ventilation, reactive chemistry, industrial hygiene, exposure monitoring, toxicology, process flow diagrams, and process and instrumentation diagrams.
Will also accept any suitable combination of education, training, and/or experience.
