Energy Systems Analyst

UChicago Argonne, LLC
Lemont, IL Full Time
POSTED ON 2/26/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/26/2025

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an Energy Systems Analyst in the area of life cycle assessment (LCA) and technology assessment to quantify energy, environmental, and economic effects of energy systems and conversion technologies. This is a full-time staff position with the Systems Assessment Center in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis Division. We are seeking candidates with background on energy technology assessment for affordable, and sustainable energy supply in the U.S. The Analyst will have the opportunity to work on research areas covering a variety of domestic feedstock supplies including renewable and biomass feedstock production, waste-to-energy/product, sustainable aviation and marine fuels, and conversion technologies using wastes, residues, as well as dedicated feedstocks. The Analyst will implement data, methodology, and results in Argonne’s R&D Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (R&D GREET) LCA model and contribute to the model development and expansion.

The Energy Systems Analyst will work with researchers in the Systems Assessment Center to assess energy systems and other technologies, analyze and synthesize datasets, provide rigorous and objective results, and contribute to Argonne’s R&D GREET LCA model development and expansion. The Analyst will collect and synthesize data and information from trustworthy datasets, literature, and agencies for energy systems and other technologies to conduct LCA with the R&D GREET modeling platform, process large datasets to derive meaningful results, work with other team members in the Systems Assessment Center to develop and apply LCA methodologies to address critical analytical issues, and communicate results and insights through journal articles, reports, and presentations to sponsors and stakeholders at conferences, workshops, and project meetings. The Analyst will be a member of the team to develop the R&D GREET model in the existing modeling platforms and a new platform to provide quantitative results for energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, criteria air pollutant emissions, and water consumption of energy systems and technologies. The Analyst will contribute to annual releases of the R&D GREET model through working with other researchers in the Center to incorporate new and updated energy system and technologies into the R&D GREET model. The Analyst will also help train R&D GREET users including government agencies and industries for their effective use of the R&D GREERT model.

The Systems Assessment Center supports diversified sponsors including DOE to assess energy, environmental, economic effects associated with energy systems, materials, and technologies to help guide R&D efforts, identify improvement opportunities, and to create new approaches for sustainability and economic analysis to address emerging issues related to energy systems and technologies. The Center continues a 30-year history of leadership in the field of LCA. The Energy Systems Analyst will join a dynamic group of researchers including experts in a variety of fields to benefit each other and will have extensive collaborations with experts from Argonne as well as in industry and at other national laboratories. The Center develops and maintains the R&D Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (R&D GREET) model which is widely used by government, industry, and academic stakeholders to provide objective and rigorous results (see https://greet.anl.gov).
