What are the responsibilities and job description for the Visiting Student - EVS - Cruz, Mariee - 1.31.25. position at UChicago Argonne, LLC?
The student is a Graduate Research fellow under the NSF-NRT TREAWS (Transdisciplinary Research and Education for Air and Water Resources Solutions in Coastal Communities) project at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The Argonne host, William Pringle, has established strong connections with the NSF Project PI and is on the external advisory board of the project. Therefore, he would like to host a Graduate Research Fellow on an internship training (funded by the NSF project) based on ongoing research by Pringle and team that has relevance to the NSF project and the student's research.
Under this internship, the student will explore evaluation of the hurricane hazard and ways to mitigate the impacts to offshore and coastal wind energy in a region of interest to the student. The student will use GIS data, numerical weather model data, and historical hurricane data for statistical and AI-based analysis. For instance, the student will assess historical and future projections of hurricanes impacting the area, analyze the range of trajectories and wind speeds, and develop statistical/AI models to predict occurrence intervals over the wind farm lifetime. From this analysis, strategic wind farm placement, layout, and operation strategy can be explored for mitigation of the hazard.
The internship will primarily be with the host, William Pringle. The student will also have ample opportunity to engage with other scientists within the Argonne team working on extreme weather and offshore wind related projects, and more broadly.
