In partnership with Prairie State College and Malcolm X College, the UChicago Medicine Health System is proud to announce the 2025 Spring cohort of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program. This program is a unique opportunity for students who are currently enrolled in the March class for Basic Nursing Assistant program at either Prairie State College or Malcolm X College.
As a participant in the program, the cost of tuition for the BNA program will be reimbursed at 100% by UCM through grant funds. Participants will also gain exposure to the inpatient setting through a paid job opportunity to work on a unit throughout the duration of the program. Lastly, participants will be eligible for full-time or part-time permanent employment at UCM, as a certified nursing assistant, upon successful completion of the program.

A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Extern is a participant in the CNA Pathway program and will perform activities which support the learning of the Nursing Support Assistant role on a patient care unit.

Under the direction of unit leadership and the support of a partner, the CNA Extern will obtain knowledge through strictly observation of proper operations, tasks, and responsibilities related to a nursing support assistant role, including:

Compensation & Benefits Overview
UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.

Responsibilities

- Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and staff
- Demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and kindness with patients and staff
- Demonstrate eagerness to learn, and enthusiasm for the work.
- Observe proper techniques and methods to support patient care
- Observe proper techniques to support patient room set-up and transitions
- Observe interdisciplinary cross collaboration and problem solving activities
- This role is a temporary, paid position.
- Time requirement is 4 consecutive hours a week (Fridays) for 8 weeks. Schedule will not conflict with education program class times and course requirements.
- Location will be onsite, on an in-patient unit.
Applicant Criteria
- Interested applicants must be currently enrolled in the 2025 March start of the Basic Nursing Assistant training program at either Prairie State College or Malcolm X College.
- Only active students for the March 2025 class will be reviewed.
- Applicants must be able to pass background check and medical clearance.
- Applicants must commit to 100% attendance to 4 hour shifts for 8 weeks
- Applicants must complete an application and interview with UCM Talent Acquisition team
