Department Summary

Pursue your passion for fundraising at the UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center (BSCRC), a multi-disciplinary and integrated collaboration of scientific, academic, and medical disciplines focused on revolutionizing the treatment of disease through cell therapies and regenerative medicine. Our more than 200 faculty members represent the professional schools (Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, and Management) as well as the College. The Center�s activities involve collaborations across UCLA, as well as throughout the state, country, and internationally. Our work encompasses all three pillars of the University�s education, research, and service mission. The Associate Director of Development is a key part of a purpose-driven team dedicated to supporting science that saves lives. The position also integrates with the robust External Affairs enterprise at UCLA that offers long-term opportunities for growth.

Position Summary

As a member of the BSCRC's frontline fundraising team, the Associate Director of Development works with both major gift and annual donors to elevate the philanthropic profile and programs of the BSCRC. Under the direction of the Director of Development, you will support a comprehensive development program through identifying new prospective donors, managing a portfolio of current and/or lapsed donors, and creating and implementing individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. Responsibilities include creating development communication pieces and generating customized written reports to effectively describe the impact of the Center's research to cultivate long-term relationships and renew/increase philanthropic support. The ability to write effectively and distill complex scientific concepts into compelling, lay language for the BSCRC's donors is critical. Additionally, you will be responsible for developing and executing a variety of donor events and will be a strong contributor to the broader mission of the BSCRC office and External Affairs enterprise. This position directly interfaces with donors, faculty, staff, community leaders, and volunteers. The successful applicant will demonstrate a high-level service approach to develop and sustain lasting and impactful relationships with colleagues and donors to meet BSCRC's development goals. This is a hybrid position, with regular in-office days and significant additional in-person work on an as-needed basis.

Salary & Compensation

  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • 3 Years of development experience, including strong knowledge of the donor cycle (Required) Or
  • Prior experience working with constituents in a related field such as sales, marketing, or business development (Preferred)
  • Possess a strong interest in and willingness to learn about stem cell research and regenerative medicine coupled with a high degree of personal integrity and enthusiasm for the Center's mission and ability to work effectively as part of a team with well-developed interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues and build and sustain lasting relationships with a wide variety of internal and external constituents. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising in a major research university or institution of equivalent complexity; ability to navigate and be effective within a complex organization. (Required)
  • Ability to conceptualize and implement broad ranging and specific individual identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. (Required)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a high level of attention to details, facts, and deadlines skills to collect and convey information with accuracy, diplomacy, and tact; ability to persuasively express the mission of the university and the fundraising goals of the campus, especially as they relate to the BSCRC; ability to write and edit reports, business correspondence, proposals, and other cultivation and solicitation materials; ability to prepare clear and compelling materials for fundraising events, initiatives, and programs. (Required)
  • Detail oriented with ability to take initiative, work independently and accept responsibility; adept at setting priorities and managing work flow to fulfill objectives and meet goals accordingly to deadlines in a dynamic and ever-changing environment. (Required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of applications as well as familiarity with other database, spreadsheet, scheduling, and email applications; willingness to learn new programs and applications in a prompt and efficient manner; knowledge of data management and manipulation sufficient to retrieve data and isolate specific market segments. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of donor files and other information; impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with donors, alumni, students, administrators, and colleagues. (Required)
  • Ability to learn and transmit scientific information, concepts, and theories via clear, concise, and accurate language that can be understood by a lay audience. Experience in writing medical, scientific, or donor/client-centric materials is preferred. (Preferred)
  • Ability to research, analyze, and gather data sufficient to prepare summaries and reports. Intuitive and inquisitive focus in conducting research to provide additional information when needed. (Required)
  • Ability to travel and work some evenings and/or weekends as needed. (Required)
  • Experience with Blackbaud CRM or equivalent database and the use of databases to generate reports is preferred. (Preferred)
  • Experience conceptualizing, planning, and implementing special events is preferred. (Preferred)

  • Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)
