What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate University Librarian for Teaching, Learning, & Research position at UCLA?

Reporting to the University Librarian, the Associate University Librarian for Teaching, Learning, & Research (AUL/TLR) is a key senior administrator in the UCLA Library. The AUL/TLR serves as the lead for public service functions and oversees User Engagement, Unified Access Services, and SRLF, ensuring Library involvement in the UCLA's teaching & research mission. Provides strategic and other long and short-term planning for the Library's budget, services, facilities, & capital projects. Works closely with campus leaders and administrators and participates in university-wide initiatives & UC system-wide initiatives. Interprets the Library's contributions and needs to constituencies within the Library, on campus, throughout UC, & to the scholarly world beyond. Creates, manages, and participates in activities that promote the Library's instructional programs, services, and resources and advances collaborations with UCLA faculty members, administrators, and other libraries at UCLA and elsewhere. Coordinates and interprets data and information that communicates the Library's value and return on investment to the UCLA communities and beyond. Actively represents the UCLA Library in UCLA, UC system wide, regional, national, and international communities and associations.

User Engagement (UE) unites public services librarians and staff across three major divisions (Sciences; Arts, Music, and Powell; and Management/Humanities and Social Sciences) and five functional teams (Outreach; Research Partnerships, Research Assistance; Collections; and Teaching and Learning) UE is a matrixed organization designed to enhance library services through a cross-disciplinary and cross-functional approach. Unified Access Services (UAS) connects access services staff in three divisions corresponding to the UE organization. UAS is also responsible for interlibrary borrowing and lending. SRLF is one of two regional storage facilities that houses low-use materials deposited by UCLA and the other UC libraries; it is located on and hosted by the UCLA campus.

Ranked among the top ten research libraries in the U.S., the UCLA Library system is a campus-wide network of libraries serving programs of study and research in many fields. Its principal components are Charles E. Young Research Library (YRL), Powell Library, Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, Science and Engineering Library, Rosenfeld Management Library, Arts Library, East Asian Library, Music Library, and Special Collections. YRL primarily serves faculty & graduate students in the humanities & social sciences, the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, and the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. The Powell Library has collections & services specially developed to meet the instructional & informational needs of undergraduates. The Biomedical Library serves the Center for Health Sciences, the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, & the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, & Public Health & the Life Sciences divisions of the College of Letters & Sciences. Subject libraries in arts, management, music, science & engineering, & East Asian studies meet the research & instructional needs of students & faculty in a variety of disciplines. The collections of the UCLA Library encompass more than 12 million volumes as well as significant collections of archives, digital resources, multimedia materials, technical reports, government publications, manuscripts, maps, microforms, oral history transcripts, photographs, and other scholarly resources. At the UC system level, the UCLA Library plays a leadership role in a number of system-wide initiatives.

1. ALA accredited master's degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with processional library education and/or experience).

2. Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in an academic or research library.

3. Successful record of exercising progressively more demanding leadership and management skills and abilities in academic or research libraries and a minimum of 5 years of management and/or supervisory experience.

4. Demonstrated experience in developing and managing strategic planning processes in large, complex organizations.

5. Strong management skills, proven planning and organizational skills, and ability to deliver desired results and outcomes.

6. Broad, in-depth knowledge of and proven administrative experience in strategic planning, introducing and managing change, budget planning and allocation, facilities and space planning and management in complex organizations.

7. Commitment to user-centered library service along with an understanding of the research and instructional needs of faculty and students and proficiency and understanding of technology and its impact on libraries.

10. Extensive experience in supervising and managing librarians and staff including coaching, motivating, and mentoring of managers and supervisors. Detailed knowledge of business policy and practice related to budgeting, accounting, purchasing, cash handling, auditing, personnel and payroll, contract and grant functions as they relate to fiscal management in a large academic or research library. Ability to interpret general and subsidiary ledgers and other financial reports.

17. Demonstrated experience in budget projection, forecasting, and developing financial status reports. Capability to analyze complex fiscal or technical data such as book fund accounting system.
