Research and Evaluation Specialist

Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Research and Director, the Research and Evaluation Specialist will play a significant role in collecting and analyzing data in support of research projects focused on community schools, school redesign, and community teacher development and retention. CCS research will be produced with the direct engagement of students, educators, scholars, post-secondary education system leaders, advocacy organizations, and state policy makers to inform the implementation and improvement of community schools. The incumbent will work closely with the CCS Leadership Team and will be deeply involved in the design, organization, management, and written analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. Must have experience in the use of some or all software used to analyze data (e.g., Dedoose; SPSS; STATA; Excel). Incumbent will be asked to participate in collaborative research projects as a part of a team, actively contributing to report writing, and other forms of research dissemination, including public presentations of research findings. This position will be based at the Center for Community Schooling at UCLA with opportunities for remote work. Some travel to conduct field work and to attend conferences/meetings will be required.

Qualifications


  • Experience writing grant proposals for extramural funding. (Preferred)
  • Experience in training local advocates to use data in presentations, and in related problem solving activities with school boards, administrators, teachers' unions and community members. (Preferred)
  • Background and experience in writing or contributing to the writing of education research summaries and policy reports, proposals and/or other related documents. (Required)
  • Experience translating data findings into web tools and data visualizations. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare high level presentations for scholars, lawyers, education administrators and policymakers. (Required)
  • Ability to work with competing deadlines, manage multiple assignments, meet fixed deadlines, and follow tasks through to completion. (Required)
  • Ability and willingness to work as an effective, collegial, contributing member of the project team and work independently to successfully accomplish assigned tasks. (Required)
  • Ability to accept delegated work, validate expectations, problem-solve obstacles, and follow-up to completion and/or report status of delegated tasks. (Required)
  • Ability and willingness to work directly and collaboratively with multilingual, multiethnic, and/or multiracial education and non-education professionals and laypersons. (Required)
  • Excellent skills in oral and written English communication including, as appropriate, skill in writing sections of reports, proposals, and other documents with fluency and precision. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, implement and successfully complete research projects with excellent attention to detail. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to extract data, merge different data sets, read and review syntax for coding of large data sets, and perform statistical analyses of large state education databases (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently operate computers and utilize quantitative statistical software (e.g. SPSS, Stata). (Required)
  • Strong knowledge of and background in quantitative research methods and analysis, education research, evaluation, and data collection design for quantitative methodologies. (Required)
  • Knowledge of K-12 education policy, at the state and federal levels, specifically pertaining to community schooling and issues of inequity in education. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations


  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (Required)
  • Master's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment


  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
  • 5% Domestic Travel - Ability to travel to sites in and outside the state to represent CCS if required by the research or at the request of the supervisor.
