Post Graduate Psychology Fellow

Job Description/Summary: The Post Graduate Psychology Fellowship program in the Behavioral Health Division is an intensive one-year training experience in a variety of specialized skills which may include assessment, child, parent-child or family psychotherapy, crisis intervention, parent-infant work, research, and/or pediatric psychology consultation-liaison at a level appropriate to the trainee's skills and level of training. The pediatric patient population served will be comprised of patients with behavioral health and/or medical conditions.  In this role, the Psychology Fellow will be exposed to a wide range of psychological, developmental, behavioral pediatrics and family systems issues in the context of a children's health care system. 

Under the supervision of fully licensed Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and/or Neuropsychologists this position will provide psychological services to complex patients through consultation, evaluation, and evidence-based interventions. 

This position will consult with multi-disciplinary personnel in the hospital and external agencies, concerning the need for, evaluation of, and development of psychological, psychoeducational, school intervention, and neurocognitive services to enhance patient care. 

Essential Functions: All functions are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed clinical staff member with primary supervision provided by a Licensed Psychologist. Supervision conforms to the requirements of the Board of Psychology and any additional departmental requirements. 

• Completes child and family assessments according to departmental standards. Responsible for prompt and accurate preparation of psychological and/or developmental reports, intake summaries, treatment plans, closing summaries, EPSDT documentation, etc.
• Utilizes a range of psychotherapeutic interventions, under supervision, including play therapy, insight-oriented individual therapy, parent-child or parent-infant therapy, family systems therapy, behavior planning, etc. to effect behavior change.
• Evaluates needs of children with sensitivity to gender differences and patients from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. School site visits may be required, as well as consultation with school personnel, social services, etc.
• Provides consultation to hospital staff in assessment and treatment of inpatients with emotional and family pathology and communicate recommendations and/or concerns to interdisciplinary medical staff.
• Provides timely, complete, and accurate documentation of all clinical contacts, co-signed by clinical supervisor.
• Formulates and follows through with treatment plans developed jointly with family and supervisory staff, as appropriate.
• Assesses suicidal risk, provides crisis intervention services, and makes appropriate plans for patients and families in crisis.
• Complies with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Consults with the child¿s family members as well as physicians, county social workers, teachers, and other professionals, as appropriate, to develop effective services for the patient and maximize positive behavior change.

Additional Responsibilities: 

• Participates in educational seminars sponsored by the Fellow¿s respective program, UCSF Benioff Children¿s Hospital, and the Behavioral Health Staff.
• Participates in interdisciplinary case conferences and rounds, as assigned.
• Assumes a leadership role in didactic seminars for practicum training programs and participating in hospital-wide professional development seminars for postdoctoral psychology fellows.
• Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards and provides excellent customer service. 
• Analyzes outcome/follow-up data for purposes of performance improvement.  Maintains related documentation as per hospital policy. Ensures that administrative procedures related to referral triage, patient billing, and insurance authorizations are done effectively.
•  Collaborates with referring physicians to exchange information regarding evaluation and treatment of patients to assure comprehensive, effective, and efficient service. 
•  Provides a Comprehensive Integrated Team approach on internal referrals and consultations using a variety of areas of expertise including treatment by psychologist, nurse practitioners, neuropsychologists, and social workers.
• Participates in ongoing clinical program development and quality improvement research.
• May have opportunities to be involved in research examining relevant areas of study to the department.
• Receives training in both theoretical and experiential approaches to clinical supervision.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities: Provides supervision for psychology practicum students in relevant department.

• Strong organizational, prioritization and problem-solving skills. 
• Ability to work collaboratively with supervising licensed clinical psychologist in problem-solve and handling of multiple priorities.

Financial Responsibilities:  Able to interact with hospital departments and staff regarding patient billing and finances.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

• Board of Psychology regulations, DSM-V, Child Abuse Reporting laws, APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists. 
• Ability to work under pressure and to respond effectively to crises. 
• Demonstrate ability to provide appropriate psychological and neuropsychological care based on the needs of a specific individual, including children, adolescents, and young adult patients.
• Ability to speak a second language preferred.

Technical Knowledge: 

• Knowledge of empirically-based mental health interventions
• Knowledge of basic psychopharmacology
• Experience with cognitive rehabilitation
• Microsoft Office Suite
• Prior experience with electronic medical records preferred.

Minimum Education: A Ph.D. or Psy.D. from an accredited institution in clinical psychology.

Education Notes: Completion of APA or APPIC approved internship, with specialization in clinical pediatric psychology.

Minimum Experience: 1 year of experience with patients with a medical condition and their families, including but not limited to pre-doctoral and professional experience preferred.
