Position descriptionThe Biological Imaging Development CoLab (BIDC) Director role is multifaceted and requires independence, initiative, organization, and flexibility. The incumbent must have experience in biological-related microscopy research, strong interpersonal skills to work closely with investigators, students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and staff members, and strong time management skills. The incumbent also must have strong mentoring and leadership skills. In general, the BIDC Director’s activities will include, but are not limited to : maintenance and management of the Biological Imaging Development CoLab’s (BIDC) microscopes and support equipment; training and assisting new users on microscopes, techniques, and data analysis; assisting in experimental design and analysis pipelines; direct supervision of two or more employees; oversight of CoLab’s budget including salaries and materials; coordinating team members for new initiatives and projects; and the mentoring and career development of co-workers. The BIDC Director is also responsible for keeping the facility current with trends and needs of the microscopy community. This is accomplished either through the raising funds and purchasing commercial equipment, designing and developing technology, or adding new support resources for the research community. The incumbent will report directly to the Director of the CoLabs and the BIDC Steering Committee. Required qualifications : A PhD in natural sciences; biology, chemistry, physics, or related discipline.At least 5 years of experience in microscopy-based instrument development.At least 5 years of experience in high-dimensional microscopy data analysis.At least 5 years of experience in biology specific microscopy techniques and analysis.Proficiency in microscopy data analysis using available software such as Imaris, Elements, LAS, FIJI, ImageJ, and Ilastik.Demonstrated skills and experience in teaching and mentoring graduate students and professional trainees.Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.Strong time management skills and demonstrated attention to details.Preferred qualifications : Excellent written and verbal communication including writing of research manuscripts, and scientific oral presentations (in-person and virtually).Experience in preparing grant proposals, especially shared equipment grant proposals.Experience in management of a shared research resource or core facility.Proficiency in custom microscopy data analysis using Matlab and Python.Hands-on experience in confocal, widefield, light-sheet, and super-resolution microscopy techniques.Experience in computer assisted drawing (CAD) for instrument design and development.Experience in electrical circuit design with soldering skills.See Table 13A for the salary range for this position.
